How can we engage older people in volunteering? A 2019 report from the British Heart Foundation found that, across the charity sector, those aged over 55 are more likely to have not volunteered and rule out volunteering in the future, challenging the misconception that volunteering is for ‘lonely’ older people or those with time on their hands... So how do we recruit and encourage older volunteers? In a blog from 2020, our CEO Michelle Wright discussed this ever relevant topic. 💬 "By using innovative, inclusive approaches, older volunteers can maintain their contribution." As part of our Heritage Compass Legacy work with MyCake Ltd, we are examining patterns in profit/loss making by heritage sub-sector. Heritage Compass participants have been allocated to 1 of 6 sub-sectors of heritage activity, which match the National Lottery Heritage Fund sub-sectors. This allows us to look at the patterns in the data by turnover band and by sub-sector of activity. We first applied this approach in our previous report https://lnkd.in/e8Kn8N32 - we have now extended the analysis to cover the four years of data from 2019 to 2022. One pattern we explore is surplus (when income exceeds expenditure by more than 2% of income in a given year vs deficit (when expenditure exceeds income by more than 2% of income). This analysis: 💡 Gives organisations a baseline to compare their own journey through Covid 💡 Helps you identify that if you are working in an area that has overall taken longer to recover then how does this support your fundraising efforts? 💡 It also provides useful data to government and private funders to understand the longer-term impacts of Covid and respond with policies to help the sector through recovery. So, let’s look at some sub-sector examples: Image 1: Organisations in all sectors showed a higher proportion making a profit in 2021 than in 2019. There is a pattern of loss-making for Historic Buildings & Monuments showing they are the only sub-sector where the proportion of organisations making a deficit increases in 2021. · Does this matter? · What impact is it having on the overall financial resilience of organisations post-Covid? Image 2: A second perspective on the data is to look at the 4yr trend by sub-sector of the proportion of organisations who are making a profit or break even – the desired position. What this data shows is that whilst a greater proportion of Historic Buildings and Monuments made a loss mid-Covid, they have recovered better than Industrial, Maritime & Transport organisations or those operating in Community Heritage and Land & Nature. If you would like to explore the benchmark data as it relates to your organisation, we have 5 new benchmark dashboards available, free, to all users of the Cause4 Heritage Benchmark and Heritage Compass Benchmark.
