The press release is not dead, it's just evolved. When I first started in #communications, nobody ever questioned the purpose of the press release. It was just assumed that every big announcement would lead with an informative press release designed to start a dialogue with journalists and control the narrative. As the world increasingly moved online over the last decade or two, folks have debated the relevance and usefulness of this steady companion. After all, it's much quicker and easier to both distribute and find information on the interwebs. As such, many #PR folks declared the press release passé. But there's so much more to the press release than simply making an announcement, and if you neglect it, you're missing out on heaps of opportunities. Like the opportunity to support your SEO efforts, generate backlinks, and drive referral traffic. Or to use it as a jumping-off point for a comprehensive content campaign that spans blogs, newsletters, social media, contributed content, email marketing, ads, events, and customer stories. Or to support your friends in sales to help them engage customers and leads. Or to drive awareness, build credibility, and support conversations with current and prospective partners and investors. Or even to support HR with their employee recruitment and retention strategy. Don't neglect the trusty press release. When designed and leveraged well, it truly is a jill of all trades.

The hiring process is always hard. When we're hiring for new marketers, there's this extra layer of "hard" for law firms. Many law firms have only one full-time marketing employee. That employee must strike the right balance of eagerness and experience. Sometimes, these firms take the mental shortcut of hiring a "more senior" marketer, assuming that seniority equates to effectiveness. However, this brings up an important question: At what point in their careers do marketers stop executing? I recently spoke with a marketing manager who was unhappy in their role. They said, “I didn’t expect there to be so much ‘executing’ with this job title.” In a nutshell, they thought they’d be managing more and executing less. This marketer isn’t alone in this thought process. Generally, when people move up pay scales, they expect their roles to become more about strategy, analysis, and telling others what to do. Your law firm might need a marketing manager. But, if your marketing department only has one person, I suspect what you really need is a marketer who can consistently execute and pull projects over the finish line. When you post a job listing with the title "marketing manager," that might feel right in terms of the experience you need but it might also attract... well... managers. -----STRANGE WHEN "CONFIDENTIAL" IS HIRING------ "Confidential" is hiring gives the immediate sneaky feeling of a Company deep in weirdness, ambiguity of purposes, mean remunerations for its employees and a Company with lots of things TO HIDE. Generally, most well-meaning, good illustrious and transparent companies like to Brand and sell themselves to potential applicants; not hide behind the sneaky cloak of "Confidential". Well meaning transparent Companies actually set aside large marketing budgets to promote and brand their names, products, services and solutions to mankind. If your Company means good and is doing good for Mankind, why HIDE ? A general people survey shows that almost 65% of applicants pass on submitting their applications to hidden ""Confidential" Companies. It is easy and not far-fetched to assume that these companies are carrying out dangerous programs or drive research works that are likely to bring disasters and hurt mankind when their products, services and solutions are released to market. Companies labelled "Confidential" give justification that they are shying away from public attention. This cannot be a solid reason because whatever evil is hidden soon resurfaces. This is in stack contrast to companies which spend vast amounts in marketing drives to promote and brand themselves. Those of you reading this article may wish to give your comment on what you think about companies hiding behind the screen of "Confidential" Hopefully we will end up with less of companies labelling themselves as "Confidential". This also may well help to EXPOSE those "Confidential" companies who may actually be driving evil programs behind the scenes. Come out of your "Confidential" cells and cupboards; let people see less of these labels. Discuss this.
