What is a lost distillery? Ghost whiskies are beloved by enthusiasts and collectors for their rarity. 🥃 These whiskies come from distilleries that have long ceased production, making the remaining stock incredibly precious. They offer a taste of history, reflecting the unique characteristics and heritage of the distilleries that produced them. 🏴 The demand for lost distillery whiskies is driven by their quality. 🌟 While some distilleries faded into obscurity, others gained legendary status post-closure. Notable names like Brora, Rosebank, Port Ellen, and Karuizawa have become so iconic that efforts have been made to revive them. The Brora 1972, for example, once sold for a few hundred pounds, now fetches thousands at auctions. 💷💰 Rarity, quality, cult status, and historical significance make these whiskies highly sought after by collectors. 📈 As supply dwindles, their value increases, turning them into potential goldmines. However, this popularity also attracts counterfeiters. ⚠️ If you're considering collecting ghost whiskies, ensure you do thorough research and verify the authenticity of the bottles. 🔍

Another one! Glenburgie, up at Kinloss, where the Airbase is. Near Forres. I just bought quite an old bottle of this, as a Single Malt product, for someone, as a present. At it's a Distillery that usually goes into a blend (there are rather a lot of these) you don't get the Distillery owner bottling it, as a 'Single Malt' product. It's always Independent Bottlers who do this. As one of the main Independent Bottlers is now stopping bottling other people's Scotch and is moving into their own Distilleries, will this mean these super-rare Scotch Whiskies will become really valuable? I hope so! Independent Bottlings MIGHT fizzle-out but we have a massive amount of 'stock' (probably 60 million Casks, nobody is prepared to say but due to Duty reasons, they definitely know! ) in Scotland. So, it will take a long time for this Industry to end! For sure, the established Independent Bottlers have found it impossible to buy truly excellent 'Old and Rare' Scotch from what ostensibly are their Competitors now but this won't be the same for (still excellent) Scotch, that's about 10 years old, or less. As it's constantly replenishing, it might never end! The debate goes on, nobody really knows. However, you wouldn't be started your own place, if you were guaranteed an unending supply chain. When you (well, probably just me) think of 10-year-old Scotch, you don't think of a Product distilled in 2012/13, yikes! 21 year old, the 'sweet spot' for Scotch (well I think so!) is now a 21st-Century product! There's A LOT of it! And there's more getting made, every year. The potential Market's vast. Several billion people. #ScotchWhiskyTruths

Port Ellen Gemini: Exclusive Whisky Set Marks Reopening Port Ellen, the legendary whisky distillery on the Scottish island of Islay, is preparing to reopen its doors this spring following a multimillion-dollar refurbishment, a full 40 years after it fell silent. To mark the occasion, Diageo has announced a set of ultra-exclusive Scotch whiskies, Gemini, that will sit at the heart of an exclusive new guest experience at the Port Ellen distillery. The Gemini collection is formed of a 44-year-old whisky taken from three European oak casks. It’s the oldest whisky ever released under the Port Ellen name and with just 274 sets, one of the rarest as well. To make this whisky fit for the grand reopening, master blender Craig Wilson split it into two different casks for the final years of its maturation. Every time we try Ledaig 10yo, we're left thinking: Is this not just the best damn ten year old whisky on the market right now?! Now don't get us wrong, we're aware this is a highly debatable statement (always is with whisky right?) about a highly competitive category. Never mind best ten year, even just "best ten year old peated whisky" would have this Ledaig battling with titans such as the Port Charlotte 10 and the cask strength Laphroaig 10 - both some of our all time favourite whiskies. The ten year old category is and always will be one of the most hotly contested of the whisky world. After all it's usually the age at which most distilleries release their flagship model. The one that merges being just old enough whisky to not be overlooked, while simultaneously being young enough to truly showcase the distillate's character... In short: this is often the bottling an entire distillery and all of it's creations will be judged on. No pressure then! While taste is subjective and even our own palate would wrestle almost daily with which is truly our "favourite" ten year old whisky, Ledaig does something special that no matter how often we try it, it always leaves us thinking that it just has to be the best. For sure, it might be the element of scarcity that makes you appreciate and consider each drop more carefully, but then the same could be said for the even more scarce, aforementioned Laphroaig - something we have literally never seen available in South Africa. It could be that it ticks all those boxes we prefer to see in a whisky: ✔ Unchillfiltered ✔ Natural Colour ✔ 46% ABV or more It could also be that it was once owned by Distell, a South African company, that undoubtedly had little to do with what went inside the bottle, but at the same time: They had little to do with what went inside the bottle! How often can you say that about a holding company?! Whatever it is we absolutely love this whisky and suggest you try it or buy it right away. Remeber the glory days when you would stumble across casks dating back to 1868, 1878, 1926, and 1939?! Me neither sadly. However, that is what Dalmore did with their record breaking 62 year old. T There are only two whiskies that have held the world record for most expensive whisky more than once; the Macallan 1926 60 Year Old, and Dalmore 62 Years Old “The Kildermorie”. I wonder why... Each of the 12 bottles of this series is unique, named after an aspect of the distillery, further enhancing its exclusivity. 'The Kildermorie' was named after the loch that feeds the Alness River, the source of water for Dalmore's whisky.
