Thank you to Kenya T. Parham, Global VP of Community & Partnerships at SPILL for joining Cashmere’s latest Culture Kickback on Black Storytelling: Addressing the Archival of Black Cultural Stories in the Digital/Social Age. We delved into Black representation in various forms of media, as well as the importance of Black ownership when it comes to the documentation and archival of Black cultural stories. What happens to these stories if a publication, social platform, or website shuts down? Who will ensure the protection of rich cultural stories from erasure? The conversation was thought provoking as we considered the larger implications.

The Counseling Hub is celebrating Juneteenth today!! Juneteenth is an annual observance on June 19 to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. Today is also a reminder to educate yourself on Black History, support Black businesses, follow Black-led organizations, and/or learn about Black artists–authors, musicians, dancers, visual artists… the wide-ranging diversity of Black experience and expression! Today is also a reminder to always stand up against oppression, exploitation, injustice, and violence. Wishing everyone a fulfilled Juneteenth! \#juneteenth \#thecounselinghub \#socialjustice

🙌🏿🙌🏾🙌🏽 Discovering our privilege is just the beginning; what we do with it truly matters. As advocates for justice and equality, we are responsible for taking action. Whether it's amplifying Black voices, supporting Black-owned businesses, educating ourselves and others, or reading Black authors' literature, each of us plays a vital role in driving meaningful change. I recommend exploring the work of my friend Golda Lee Bruce: 'Born on an Island: Stories from a Trinidadian Girlhood.' Let's embrace diverse perspectives and celebrate the rich contributions of Black writers. What's your recommendation for this month?

February brings both pain and joy as media outlets headline histories of unmitigated harm, often side-by-side with revelatory stories of suppressed or unrecognized Black brilliance. Let's take this time as context-setting and reflect on where we stand today. Let's harness the insights we gain to imagine how we can engage in reparations that lead to a future where we are not estranged across racial lines. Yes, reparations are due from government, financial systems and societal structures. Absolutely. But throughout Black History Month 2024, let's ask ourselves a different kind of question: How can we as individuals and organizations—especially foundations and the people within them—leave behind our distorted identities around social, financial and cultural assets and weave healthy identities in their place? How can we build relationships and take tangible actions to repair our estrangement? We'll have more to say, and much more than that to learn, as the month goes on.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a powerful day of liberation and reflection. As we honor the end of slavery in the United States, let's come together to recognize the enduring strength and resilience of the Black community. This is a moment to reflect on the journey toward freedom and equality, and to energize our collective efforts in the ongoing fight for justice. Partner with us in celebrating Black culture, history, and contributions that continue to shape our world. Together, we can build a future where freedom and equality are truly universal. Did you know? Enslaved people ingeniously used hair braiding as maps for routes of escape from their enslavers. This incredible act of resistance highlights the ingenuity and resilience of those who fought for freedom. After emancipation, Black people have continued to use their hair as an act of celebration, resistance, and a bold expression of self. #Juneteenth #BlackFreedom #CelebrateFreedom #EnergizeChange

It’s Black History Month. As we continue to see attacks on DEI efforts and programming, I challenge everyone in my network to examine how they can value, care and respect for Black individuals such that either they will be impacted or they will make an impact on others in a new and different way this month. Will you find ways to learn more about Black individuals and their history? Will you share the information you already know with someone else? Will you amplify the voices of Black individuals in your network? Will you participate in a celebration? Will you support a Black owned organization? Sound off on how you plan to make impact this Black History Month in the comments. #blackhistorymonth #inclusionmatters

I've noticed over the past few years that many people come across as apathetic or even outright avoidant towards Black history month or the accomplishments of Black individuals in general. Now, maybe I'm biased, I mean two of my cousins are 25% Black, one of my exes is a Black woman from Somalia, and several of my friends that I care about are Black. And, you know, race is a social construct that has no scientific basis. So, when people are apathetic, outright avoidant or even aggressive towards Black histories and the accomplishments of Black individuals throughout the year over many years it kind of baffles me, and gives me the impression racism is much more pervasive in many societies than we are often willing to recognize. And, if that is you who is apathetic, avoidant, or aggressive towards Black histories and accomplishments, I really think you should ask yourself why? Is it because something you were taught when you were 5? Is it because of the actions of one or a few individuals? Let me remind you that we are all human, and that we all have agency. And that the differences we are born with do not invalidate ones humanity nor should it rob individuals that may be different from you from achieving great things, having their accomplishments recognized, and having their histories recognized as well. We cannot truly grow as a species if we keep on denying the rights and recognition of individuals who may not fit whatever version of normality may be in your head. So, I ask of you this month to self-reflect, be willing to listen to the voices and histories of Black individuals, take some initiative to learn and to understand, and be willing to challenge your own beliefs if for some reason you are either bigoted towards or avoidant of the achievements of Black individuals and populations. None of us are ever done growing and we are all human, regardless of the differences we are born with.
