The financial sector has historically been a male-dominated field, but times are changing ever more rapidly. Inclusion of women in finance is not just a necessity; it's a game-changer for the industry. I remember when I started out my career in the ecosystem, more often than not I would be the only woman in larger meetings and cohorts. Skipping to 4 years later I’ve started seeing more women in discussions and in the networking forums and nothing makes me more happier. Now how do we make sure this change grows hereon? This means creating opportunities for leadership, providing mentorship, and breaking down the barriers that have traditionally held women back. When women excel, they bring unique perspectives, enhance decision-making processes, and contribute to a more balanced and dynamic industry. However, the journey doesn’t stop there. Whenever I bump into another woman from the industry, this is a conversation topic that always crops up. It's crucial for women to support and uplift each other. By fostering a culture of collaboration and mentorship, we can build a stronger, more inclusive financial sector. Don’t give me pink balloons and platitudes. Don’t give me cupcakes and slogans. Give me change. Real change. I heard Anne Boden say recently that we have to stop asking women to change. There is nothing wrong with women, it’s the system that’s broken. She’s right. In the UK, just 2% of VC funding goes to female-led businesses. In founding Mazuma Accountants we have always been an outlier - a female founded accounting and tech firm whose size and recent investment put us firmly in that quoted minority. But it’s lonely out here. There should be more of us. So today, on International Women’s Day, look around your leadership, investment and recruitment pipelines and ask where the women are. A new study from BlackRock speaks volumes - better gender balance leads to more money! Financial Times just shared an article last week on the topic. While this may not be a surprise for many, it may be for some. However, it has been proven for years. McKinsey & Company examined 1,039 companies in 15 countries, and connected gender diversity to higher profitability. Further, Bank of America reported that US public companies with diverse boards had higher returns on equity and lower earnings volatility compared to less diverse peers. Finally, despite clear data showing female founders excel in multiple areas, including faster exits, efficient cash management, quicker profitability, and improved business cultures (First Round Capital's report, 2005), last year's allocation of venture capital to women remained at a mere 1.7%. This reveals a significant gap in the rational, data-driven decision-making of male venture capitalists, investors, and leaders in supporting and promoting women.
