When starting out as a coach & consultant you want and need to get clients…and quickly! However, we’d suggest it shouldn’t be any client, but the RIGHT client. What is the RIGHT client? · They should be in a sector or market you know well and understand. · They should be in a geographical area within which you are happy to travel. · They should be organisations with which you wish to work and are happy to devote time and energy to. Avoid those which don’t ‘resonate’ with you because you won’t care sufficiently to give your best. · They should have money! There’s no point in targeting a sector, which is suffering a down-turn and/or is cash-strapped! Pointless. · It should be a relatively easy for you to be instructed by them. Some organisations, will have you jump through all manner of hoops, fill out endless forms, submit goodness knows how many policy documents, attend umpteen meetings-come-interviews, only to tell you they went with another provider because they were the cheapest! Find out as quickly as possible how important cost is in their decision-making process. If it’s number one, perhaps you should walk away, unless you are marketing yourself as ‘Cheap ‘n’ Cheerful Coaching & Consulting: there’s no price too low for me to say ‘yes’!
