RESEARCH - Value and benefits of sport Sticking with sport during school years linked to academic success. Katherine Owen, Bridget Foley, Ben J. Smith, Karine E. Manera, Lucy Corbett, Michelle Lim, Philayrath Phongsavan, Pamela Qualter, Ding Ding, and Philip Clare. University of Sydney. Journal of Physical Activity and Health (December 2023) In the first long-term study of its kind, published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, the researchers followed the sports participation of over 4000 Australian children from age 4 to 13. They then matched this with academic trajectory up to 21 years-of-age. Hey Australian universities and equity practitioners! Do you want to know how effective an equity-focused intervention is? The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success (formerly NCSEHE), through the Equity Frontiers Program, is funding trials to test the effectiveness of interventions designed to improve higher education access and success for students who are historically under-represented in Australian higher education. Applications for funding are NOW OPEN, and can be made at any time by submitting an Expression of Interest (EoI). Applicants identify and describe the intervention rather than the trial methods in this initial application stage. The Equity Frontiers Program Guidelines make clear the selection criteria, focused on the intervention and its potential to impact policy and practice, relevance to the equity sector, scalability, and evaluability. Forget the football - there's another field where the city of Manchester is even more of a world-leader: science, technology and innovation. Times Higher Education has selected the The University of Manchester as host of the 2024 World Academic Summit, bringing together hundreds of university presidents, chief executives and policymakers from across the world in Manchester in October 2024. And this week the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced that Salford, in Greater Manchester, will be its new, second headquarters. As universities and science minister Michelle Donelan MP said: "Greater Manchester, synonymous with the Industrial Revolution, is now at the forefront of our plans to cement the UK's position as a science & tech superpower. From Alan Turing to the discovery of graphene, it's a place steeped in a legacy of technological progress." Manchester University's president, Dame Nancy Rothwell, picked up Times Higher Education's lifetime achievement award at the #THEAwards last week. She pointed out that her university has a turnover equal to that of Manchester United and Manchester City Football Club put together - an extraordinary impact on the community. Greater Manchester also of course hosts The Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Salford and even The University of Bolton is seeking to capitalise on the city's leading position with a controversial bid to re-name itself the "University of Greater Manchester". It is also home to one of the modern era’s greatest science communicators - Brian Cox. Here are a few of our highlights: ⭐ The coronavirus pandemic led to many participants learning about virtual exchange for the first time. ⭐ Participants noted the importance of developing a comprehensive international programming portfolio that includes both education abroad and virtual exchange. ⭐ Participants highlighted how virtual exchange can advance equity and minimize power differences by increasing access to international education.
