Quizás muchos lo desconocen, pero desde el año 1966 y todos los años, una de las asociaciones más importantes de Computación, la ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) entrega el premio Alan Turing Award a aquellos científicos que han realizado contribuciones importantes mundiales a la Ciencia de la Computación (https://lnkd.in/eyWzFedH). Muchos que se han ganado ese tremendo premio han sido científicos/investigadores en IA, incluyendo unos años atrás a G. Hinton, B. Yoshua y L. Yan, y mucho antes. M. Misnky, R. Brooks, entre otros destacados.
El "ACM Alan Turing Award" se ha considerado por años prácticamente el "Nobel de la Computación" debido a que no existe el premio Nobel para Computación ni para Matemáticas.
Sin embargo, hoy se marcó un hito sin precedentes en la historia de la humanidad: Por primera vez, se entregó el Premio Nobel de Física a dos investigadores de nivel mundial que crearon las bases de los métodos en IA denominados redes neuronales articiales. Para que pase esto, el premio se presentó como avances en Ia IA basada en la Física.
El premio este año se otorgó a John Hopfield (físico) y Geoffrey Hinton (científico cognitivo):
💡Hopfield es el creador de los modelos llamados las redes (neuronales) de Hopfield. Una red de Hopfield (1982) es un tipo de memoria "asociativa", basada en los "vidrios" de spins (i.e., material donde pequeñas partículas magnéticas (spins) se alinean aleatóriamente, haciendo que "discutan" constantremente sobre la dirección a la cual deben apuntar), que se usa como una memoria accesible por contenido. En simple, una red de Hopfield es un tipo de red neuronal recurrente que puede "recordar" patrones específicos y funciona como una memoria asociativa: cuando se le proporciona una entrada parecida a un patrón aprendido, la red ajusta sus "conexiones" para recordar el patrón completo. Del punto de vista de la física, esta utiliza estados de energía (spins) para "recordar" y converger en los patrones almacenados.
💡Hinton ya había ganado el ACM A. Turing Award por sus contribuciones y sentar las bases del "aprendizaje profundo" (Deep Learning). Sus varios aportes incluyen el algoritmo de backpropagation que ayuda a las redes neuronales a aprender (i.e., "ajustar" sus parámetros) desde los datos que se le enseñan. Además, Hinton aportó a los modelos llamados máquinas de Boltzmann, representaciones distribuidas (los fundamentos de los embeddings actuales en LLM) y otros tipos de redes neuronales desde los años 80.
