The traditional emphasis on GDP and growth should be complemented by a holistic approach that considers safety, environment, diversity of experience, cultural vibrancy, equity, and affordability. This perspective is in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Cities, despite their potential for growth and development, often grapple with stark socioeconomic inequalities, poor environmental conditions, and unaffordable housing. The rapid urbanization and poorly planned growth have led to challenges such as slums, traffic congestion, and greenhouse gas emissions. To address these issues, a shift towards more equitable and sustainable cities is imperative. This involves rethinking urban planning, infrastructure, and policies to enhance the quality of life for all residents. The Economist article also highlights the need to prioritize the needs of the under-served and focus on ending inequality and invigorating livelihoods to create the cities we need. By adopting a people-centric approach to urban development, cities can become centers of innovation, productivity, and low-carbon prosperity, where every individual and family can thrive. During this period between #CanadaDay and #IndependenceDay, I reflect on what I continue to call “the most unique border city situation in the world”. Windsor and Detroit. Built on similar industries. With a river between them. Some look at the Detroit River as an edge. I always prefer to think of it as a seam. Canada and the US. Detroit and Windsor, two cities tied together physically, economically, and socially. There are lessons that can be learned on both sides of the border. The challenge is to find ways to increase the dialogue and share examples of what works and what doesn’t, the fear of competition that typically exists among urban areas in close proximity can be lessened because of each city’s orientation towards its own country’s economic system. Where is your city at? I see the transformation happening in MKE. From the article, "Our cities will be better served by embracing the transition to a world that is less centered around offices.
