National Minority Mental Health Month is observed in July. Minority populations are less likely to receive a diagnosis of a behavioral health issue and less likely to have access to the proper care. A significant treatment gap exists for individuals living with mental health and substance use conditions. As of 2023, 55% of adults who experience some form of mental illness receive no treatment and 60% of youth with major depression go without help. Currently, and for the foreseeable future, the United States is experiencing a shortage of behavioral health providers to deliver needed services. One of the most effective ways to close the prevention and treatment gap in the mental health and substance use fields is through behavioral health integration (BHI). May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which is a time to raise awareness of and reduce the #stigma surrounding behavioral health issues, as well as highlighting the ways how mental illness and #addiction can affect all of us – patients, providers, families, and our society at large. Oklahoma has some of the highest rates for Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders. Based on 2020 data, Oklahoma ranks 5th (25.6%) in the nation for rates of Any Mental Illness1. Also, Oklahoma’s rate for Any Substance Abuse Disorders is 16.1%. This means that between 700,000 and 950,0002 adult Oklahomans need services; most are not receiving the care they need to fully recover from their illnesses. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #endthestigma #breakthestigma
