Early in my career I experienced what I would call a "caregiver crisis." My maternal grandmother, a breast cancer survivor, quite suddenly became ill again and needed immediate hospice care. I was in Connecticut; she was in California. My mother, who resided in Maine, immediately flew out to her bedside. When I got there a day later, I understood quickly that I was in the better mental and emotional state between the two of us to lead the care decisions for my grandmother. Unfortunately, we spent the last cogent hours of my grandmother's life trying to make decisions about where to place her, how to arrange for her transportation and navigating a horrible hospital discharge system that clearly wanted her out of the building so they could "get another head in the bed." Lucky for my mother, she was self-employed. I was leading marketing for a large, multi-site eldercare company. Fortunately for me, my colleagues were deeply invested in Person Centered Care and gave me every ounce of support and guidance I would need to help my mother and I navigate the entire crisis. If I had been employed differently, I likely would never have been able to provide the support that my mother needed. Even so, when I think about the breadth of one of my current client's caregiver benefits solutions, if my employer had offered it, my experience would have improved dramatically. How?
