The latest issue of "Cotton: Review of the World Situation," which focuses on the critical issue of traceability, is now available — and it's FREE! Legislation being crafted now will have a massive impact on the entire cotton value chain. Traceability isn't just a buzzword; it's the future of transparency for cotton . Without evidence of where an item's raw materials came from — and how they moved through the supply chain — it will be impossible for companies to justify their sustainability claims. In the February 2024 issue of the Review, there are no fewer than eight articles addressing the regulations that could reshape the cotton industry from different points of view. Climate change has an immense and severe impact on #cotton production, and in turn, on the livelihoods of millions of farmers and workers in the cotton industry. This is the worrying, though not surprising conclusion of the new Cotton and #Climate paper published by Solidaridad Network on the Sustainable Cotton Hub. The research shows that net-zero fossil fibers are not possible, but net-zero and even net-positive cotton might be feasible. However, current cotton farming practices too often are ecologically damaging and still contribute to climate change. Within the foreseeable future almost every cotton producing region will be negatively affected by climate change. And #smallholder farmers living in #poverty because of low cotton prices will not be able to adapt fast enough to ensure reliable production. Fashion brands and retailers, it’s time to turn the tide! With dedication and support from companies in the cotton and textile industry, sustainable cotton produced in a regenerative way can be a solution! Last week on #BetterCottonConference2024 in Istanbul by Better Cotton. It was a great gathering of the cotton industry bringing together producers, cotton companies, standards & certification, traders, brands and retailers to work on more #sustainablecotton. I'm glad to have made the connection to most engaged people like Pallavi Sharma (Global Rights Compliance), Edward Brial (Materra), Gerlind Bäz (Aid by Trade Foundation) and many more. My takeaways: - a great event for networking in a great city - #sustainability moves quickly away from voluntary certification towards legal #compliance - sustainable cotton must become #traceable - data gets more and more important but most players including standards and certifications are not up to it yet. Symptomatic was that I had as many talks about sustainable cotton as I had about #deforestation and #EUDR. The sharp turn towards compliance is happening fast. Even if cotton farming is not directly affected yet it will become through the new EU directives such as #CSRD and #CS3D. Get prepared.
