CEO Christian E. shares, "Our pasture-based livestock farmers use practices that are adapted from observing animals in the wild interract with their environment. By farming with nature in this way we can reduce inputs by designing the farm as an ecosystem that sustains itself with minimal outside influence. An example of this is the implementation of holistic planned grazing for cattle. Carefully managing the movement of cattle on pasture, allowing for periods of recovery for the pasture, allows our farmers to turn sunlight, air, and water into raise nutrient-dense beef." Governing everything from the way our food is produced, to how it is distributed and consumed, the farm bill determines the entirety of our food and ag system, but currently it supports industrial agriculture practices that prioritize commodities over communities. We think it’s time for a change. Soil is our common ground and our common good, so we are calling on Congress to support regenerative agriculture in the farm bill. Regenerative agriculture combines Indigenous knowledge, holistic management, and cutting edge science to work within the context of natural systems. the way we currently classify farm types and label pork may not be helping consumers make informed decisions when it comes to buying more sustainable meat. Just as importantly, we aren’t recognising, rewarding and incentivising the best-performing farmers. The study also indicates that instead of singling out farm types, systems or practices, we need to focus on meaningful, measurable outcomes for people, the planet and the pigs – and assess the performance of individual farms based on these.
