The national broker-to-carrier spot rate for reefer is $2.31/mile (including fuel). 💲 The spread between shipper-to-carrier contract rates and broker-to-carrier spot rates, excluding fuel, is $0.52. Brokers seek dependable carriers. Carriers look for reliable, well-paying freight. Back when I was dispatching, I'd always ask brokers a few key questions after delivering a load: How often do you run this lane? What other loads do you frequently have? Can I see a list of your upcoming loads? These questions helped me build a network of trusted brokers, moving beyond the load boards. Now, from the other side, I notice these questions are rarely asked. It's often up to me to keep in touch with carriers to rebuild that network. Yesterday I had a situation where my customer was asking for my lowest possible quote on a lane as they were trying to win a new customer themselves. Many brokers would have given their "lowest" and hope the customer is none the wiser. I decided to run the truck at a loss, share the rate confirmation with my customer, and explained that I understand what it's like trying to woo a new customer. The response I received from my customer? Quote requests for 14 additional lanes. Lesson? Provide honest and transparent service, and the opportunity to pay for your chair will always be there. It's been one of those weeks thus far... but that's logistics. This load picked up for one of our valued customers this morning and is safely in-transit. Unfortunately, it's also a load in which I missed the dimensions on that tall piece you can see, and quoted it on the wrong trailer type, which resulted in us losing money to get this covered. I say all the time this business requires integrity. If you make a mistake, you own that mistake, even if it costs you money. My mistake is not the customer's problem. New brokers, if you misquote something, move it anyway. Don't roll pick ups and ABSOLUTELY DO NOT turn loads back. Build your relationships and earn your customers' trust by doing the right thing.
