What I find truly fascinating (but which also held true for many neighborhoods there 30+ years ago when I lived in the area) is that many areas of San Diego county have good pedestrian space and infrastructure. But what is absent is a culture of walking & #walkability. There are definitely great pockets of walking culture around the sprawling county, but they are just that - pockets, isolated and frankly the most convenient thing for most folks in the region is to drive. It’s difficult to have a functional life in regions like this if you don’t have a car. You can build your life for example around some of the public transit options but you have to be fiercely dedicated to crafting that life, it’s neither mainstream nor usually easy. I thought a lot about cultures of mobility when I was in San Diego. How to craft a culture of walking and walkability in areas that DO have good space and infrastructure for it but the routines, mobility habits and culture for it just don’t exist. I have a lot of ideas for this (too much to cram into a post) and over at GWCN: Global Walkability Correspondents Network our local chapters launching are also often led by people who are exploring similar questions and pioneering shaping local walking movements themselves. And I have to confess, it’s easy to see why people don’t walk when, even if there is great pedestrian space, there’s no evidence whatsoever of walking habits and culture. I generally felt safe moving along the sidewalks of the area we stayed but there were times where, as a woman and specifically as a mother moving by foot with two children I felt vulnerable being the lone pedestrian as a steady stream of car traffic zoomed by us. Also, I certainly did not rely only on walking during our stay, it would have been beyond difficult with the distances covered especially with two young children, which brings up aspects of local living that are dear to me (especially after becoming a mother) but that’s another post….

An important enabler of living connected to place is being able to work near where you live and, through your work, contribute positively to the place where you live, as Nic Jay Aulston’s story illustrates in this profile. Nic also helps us understand there are many layers to what constitutes local work, including ownership, employees, customers or clients, and relationships with other local organizations and businesses. This post is part of my Profiles in Living Connected to Place series that portrays individuals living connected to place with intention and the support of systems that make it possible. https://lnkd.in/gmYzJHsA

Walking is a great way to get around, but poor lighting and limited visibility make nighttime walks less than ideal. I've experienced this firsthand walking home from Carseldine station in Brisbane. My research during my university studies explored how pedestrian spaces can be designed to be more inclusive for everyone. Back then, a strong focus on women's safety needs in nighttime walking infrastructure was less prevalent. Thankfully, the conversation is changing, and specific platforms and champions are bringing this issue to light. Studies show that good lighting, natural surveillance, and well-designed paths can make walking safer and more attractive for everyone. These improvements benefit public health and foster social inclusion by making people feel comfortable walking at night. Let's discuss ways to make our cities more walkable and inclusive! #pedestrianinfrastructure #citiesforpeople #walkableneighborhoods

Choosing the perfect neighborhood for your family is a big decision, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming! 🏡 Here’s a simple guide to help you find a neighborhood that’s just right for your kids: 1️⃣ Safety First: Look at local crime rates. A safe environment where kids can play outside is essential. 2️⃣ Schools Matter: Check the ratings of nearby schools. Good schools can make a huge difference in your child's education. 3️⃣ Parks and Playgrounds: Make sure there are parks and recreational areas nearby. Being close to nature is great for kids' health and happiness. 4️⃣ Commute Time: Consider your daily commute. Less time driving means more quality time with your family. 5️⃣ Community Vibes: Visit the neighborhood at different times of the day. Are there other kids playing? How do people interact? A friendly community is key to feeling at home. 6️⃣ Growth Potential: Think about the future. Is the neighborhood growing? Are there new businesses, schools, or parks being built? 7️⃣ Explore: Walk around! Spend time in local cafes, shops, and parks. Get a feel for the neighborhood vibe. As families grow, so do their dreams... and their homes. The quest for a safe, nurturing neighborhood becomes not just a desire but a necessity. 🏘️ In Carlsbad, the search for the 'perfect' family-friendly zone is more than just about upsizing homes. It's about creating environments where safety meets playfulness, where communities prosper, and where kids can laugh freely in their backyards. After guiding numerous families through this pivotal journey, I've pinpointed gems in Carlsbad for our growing tribes: 1️⃣ Community Engagement: Areas with active neighborhood watches and community events. 2️⃣ Quality Schools: Neighborhoods feeding into top-tier educational institutions for our little learners. 3️⃣ Green Spaces: Local parks and recreation areas for weekend soccer games and family picnics. 4️⃣ Quiet Streets: Cul-de-sacs and low-traffic roads, where the only rush hour is kids racing on their bikes. 5️⃣ Proximity to Essentials: Easy access to healthcare, grocery stores, and family services. This is about more than just moves; it's about planting roots in a setting that feels like the small towns of yesteryear, yet is vibrant with today's modern amenities. 🌳 I take pride in not just listing and marketing homes but in helping families write the next exciting chapter of their lives. Let’s dialogue. What do YOU think makes a neighborhood truly family-friendly? #FamilyFirst #CarlsbadHomes #RealEstate #Safety #Community
