I’m so inspired to see Opportunity@Work, founded by McKinsey alum Byron Auguste, receive a $20 million grant from MacKenzie Scott and Yield Giving to champion a skills-first labor market.
McKinsey is deeply committed to this movement. We’re proud to serve as a pro bono supporter of Opportunity@Work through data and analytics tools that help employers hire workers skilled through alternative routes—known as STARs. These are the more than 70 million US workers who have honed their skills via community college, military service, or on-the-job training, yet are overlooked due to the lack of a bachelor’s degree.
And we’re not just supporters. At McKinsey, we believe exceptional can come from anywhere. We hire people, not degrees. We are constantly pushing our hiring practices to be more inclusive, backing our efforts with research on skills-based hiring and data-driven solutions that look for knowledge, skills, and the capacity to learn.
The “degree screen” is a significant barrier to employment for 60 percent of American workers. By tearing down this paper ceiling, Opportunity@Work is not just talking about change; they’re creating it. Let’s keep working to build a future where everyone has the opportunity to rise as high as their skills and potential can take them.
