Recently, Paul Fain highlighted the need of youth apprenticeship programs in our workforce in his newsletter “The Job.” He instantly noted that employers need to take a more active role in the U.S. education system to establish career pathways for a broader range of Americans, especially those without four-year degrees. Despite bipartisan support and the pressing demands of the labor market, progress in this area has been slow at best. Noting two Brookings Institute reports (read them here and here), he commented that the best approach to solving this need is through regional, multi-sector coalitions, a goal CareerWise and our partners have been working toward for years. He quotes Annelies Goger, a The Brookings Institution fellow and co-author of the report: “The changes that we propose involve a transformative shift in how employers in the U.S. have seen themselves, from being a consumer of talent to being a co-producer of talent… Eventually, more employers will come to the conclusion that they have to play a more active role in creating the prepared workforce they need.” You can read the entire newsletter where he explores “A Unified Voice on Workforce Needs” here. https://lnkd.in/g_wEEgqn

🤔 What do students REALLY care about when it comes to choosing a graduate programme? 🤔 We asked our new cohort of Wiser Academy ambassadors (from across 70 UK & Irish universities) for their thoughts. My favourite insight? 95% said they'd want to hear first-hand experiences from a current cohort before committing to apply. Which stat surprises you the most? 👀 If you’d like to know more about this year’s Wiser Academy and what their employer preferences are, drop me a message 😊 #earlycareers #earlytalent #WeAreWiser #GenZ

🗳 The results are in: New Jobs for the Future (JFF) #voterpoll reveals that 84% of the voters we surveyed want policymakers to help provide better guidance to people to help them find education, training, and career options that fit their needs and that lead to jobs that pay family sustaining wages. Unfortunately, too many young people leave high school without clarity on where they're going next or how to get there. They face a vast array of degree and nondegree options but lack the information on which paths lead to #qualityjobs. That's why JFF partnered with American Student Assistance to create the ASA Center for Career Navigation. There are many exciting things coming from the Center! Sign-up for the Center's newsletter below. While higher education undoubtedly offers significant benefits, including expanded career opportunities and personal growth, it's essential to acknowledge that alternative paths, such as vocational training and apprenticeships, can also lead to fulfilling and lucrative careers. Mike Rowe's perspective on the rising costs of a four-year degree is certainly thought-provoking. Watch at the link below. https://lnkd.in/e7FkA2_e
Mike Rowe: Nothing has gotten more expensive more quickly than a four-year degree

Are you involved in early careers recruitment? If so, we would love to work with you! See below for details of our upcoming Employer Forum where we would welcome your insight into the challenges faced by recruiters and how we can support young people in our school and college network to be ready for the world of work. #earlycareers #recruitment
Skills, skills, skills. No, I'm not about to start a Destiny's Child parody group #phew but this is what is on my mind today. There is so much talk about #skills in the #careers and #education space and a recent article in the CDI's Career Matters summarised this very well, highlighting the different names for transferable/soft/employability skills that are being promoted through careers education in schools and colleges. No matter what labels we use, we at the South London Careers Hub and South London Partnership are very interested in how we can support schools to embed skills education throughout their curriculum and to increase the confidence of staff throughout the school to talk about skill development and its relevance to the workplace. If you think is an area you could provide insight or guidance into, please join us at our upcoming Employer Forum on 16th July and register here https://lnkd.in/e2j4ZgVR. We would love to hear your ideas!
