I use my career arc to build credibility. Credibility helps more people learn from what I’ve learned, and I’m confident my learnings will benefit others. Candidly, it makes me uncomfortable. A big part of my career success was landing at a growing company at the right time. And that was pure luck. I'm not even sure why I accepted the job - I didn't want to do sales, and it paid way less than other opportunities. There are hundreds (thousands?) of tech companies I could have joined in 2014. I could have worked just as hard and had an extremely different experience. My story would look really different if my employer needed to do a layoff in 2014-2016. My story would look really different if they didn’t grow from ~200 employees to ~6,000. I’m proud that I maximized my circumstances. I was fortunate to land in a great environment and took advantage. However, many of you won’t land in the right environment right away. Through no fault of your own, you may not have the role/title you were hoping to have at this stage in your career. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else’s journey. Just maximize based on your circumstances, and try to create better circumstances where possible.

🔍✨ Reflecting on a challenging experience: Google cut 13-year career short with a 3 am email, leaving individual and thousands stranded. The aftermath? A self-offboarding site, EAP access, and a less-than-helpful career transition service. But what we truly needed was compassion and human connection. A simple acknowledgment of our dedication and support during the company's success would have meant the world. Companies, take note: job loss is a major life shock. It deserves understanding and personalized support. Let's strive for conscious business practices that avoid layoffs or, at the very least, handle them with empathy. It's disheartening to see leaders "taking full responsibility" while cashing in millions. That's why we have committed to supporting those impacted by inhumane practices through coaching and advocacy with the help of counseling. When it comes to our careers, patience is often something we need to remember to embody. Things like building quality career relationships, searching for a new job, waiting to hear back about a potential job offer or a promotion often takes time and much of it can be out of our control. It can be frustrating to play the waiting game and wonder when things will happen or get done. But by choosing to stay present, we can learn to endure and tolerate the discomfort and embrace patience while we are waiting. Here’s how: * Set realistic expectations - When we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves, we’re more likely to become impatient. Being realistic with ourselves, setting achievable goals, not setting the bar too high for ourselves can help with this. From a career perspective, this could mean coming to terms in getting that promotion or landing a new job will take longer than planned. * Take breaks - When we’re feeling frustrated, it can be helpful to take a break and find something else to do. This can help us clear our minds and come back to the task with a fresh perspective. * Practice gratitude - Focusing on what we’re grateful for can help us maintain a positive attitude, even when things aren’t going our way. When it comes to our careers, it could be having gratitude for the job we have amidst layoffs or for that connection with an individual who opens a door of opportunity for you. * Learn to let go - When things are out of our control, it’s best to let them go instead of ruminating in it. Learning to accept what we can’t change can help us stay present and patient on what we can actually control. People who build truly great careers all have a few things in common: ➡️ Diversity of experiences. They have pivoted into many different jobs and companies, accumulating many lessons along the way. ➡️ Weathering tough storms. They have seen many lows as well as many highs and have risen above the challenges. ➡️ Actually caring about others. They invest in people to help them grow. And leave a trail behind them of people who’d love to work with them again. Also… You don’t have to have a “perfect” track record. You don’t need to constantly get step-wise promotions. You’re allowed to have career breaks. You don’t only have to work at the “best” companies. It’s ok to have some jobs you didn’t love, to have made mistakes, and to have pulled yourself up from the floor more than once. In fact, I would say that’s all part of the typical journey that leads to a great career. So if that’s you? Keep going. #careergrowth #careeradvice
