Nashville Session 2024 was another great event in Nashville. Hosted by the Nashville Health Care Council and the healthcare community of Nashville, this event is turning into the seminal eclectic event for the healthcare leaderships teams from around America. This is not a giant event like HIMSS or even VIVE but more subdued event with no vendors booths. Its turns out, this made all the difference in the world. The main stage at the Country Music Hall of Fame proved that a fireside chat is exactly that. A warm inviting space to hear stories, ideas and insights from the top hospital systems in the world. The picture below is perfect example. Making new friends is what makes a great conference complete. Here’s a short shoutout to all the new friends made at this event. Sharing ideas of a better healthcare future with leadership from the cornerstone companies of America is truly inspiring and motivating. Last week, I spent a couple of days at Australian Healthcare Week. There were many lessons/insights from the sessions – existing and new. Here are mine:   🔴 Technology being the enabler, not the solution. 🔴 The workforce of the future is not only about the future workforce, but supporting those currently in it – with career pathways, flexibility, culture, and reasons to be retained. 🔴 Health care is lagging behind other industries when it comes to embracing technology. 🔴 We can learn from other industries. At the end of the day, we’re not that different. 🔴 The importance of leading with humility. 🔴 Being patient-led is more than just saying you’re patient-led. 🔴 Town Halls are for everyone. Share the stage and don’t make it top-heavy. 🔴 Technology without good leadership is worthless. 🔴 You can have a good experience at a bad hospital, and you can have a bad experience at a good one. 🔴 Personalisation is the key to a good experience. 🔴 It’s not a resistance to technology, it’s a resistance to change. I had the pleasure of attending the AHIP conference last week. It was a great opportunity to connect with old and new acquaintances and to spread the message of Livara Health with folks struggling through high musculoskeletal costs. A few thoughts: 1. Many conferences have really leaned into the moderated panel format, even for more intimate breakout sessions. I imagine the upside is that you can pack more organizations/people into the agenda, as instead of one organization presenting, you might have 3 on a panel and another as moderator. The downside is that there tend to be less actionable takeaways from a panel discussion. Panels tend to lean into the 'what' and the 'why', which are important. But people at conferences are more interested in the 'how' and those being as actionable as possible. 2. One booth in the expo hall had puppies to cuddle at their booth. It was a mob scene. Genius. 3. In panel or presentation formats, people have a bad habit of ending their session or thought with "And so the question is how do you do X, Y, and Z?" or some version of that. Everyone came to the conference for the answer to those questions. 4. I used to think of Las Vegas a certain way. I don't know if it's age or something else, but I came away from this trip feeling like it would be a nice place to visit for leisure for a few days. 5. Pharmacy spend is such a big topic across healthcare right now. One presenter said something to the effect of, "people think it is a spend problem (the drugs are so expensive), but I think of it as a utilization problem." I thought that was a good point, and you could extend that to all corners of healthcare. Bringing down cost - like salaries, supply chain, research, rent - seems difficult. But helping patients or members make the right choices for outcomes and cost feels very practical - like, oh I don't know, what we do everyday with musculoskeletal patients at Livara Health 6. Anytime I hear Sachin H. Jain, MD, MBA speak or share here on LinkedIn, I am impressed with both his thought leadership on the opportunities in healthcare, and his ability to really eloquently relay his thoughts and the actions his organization is taking. You get the sense he sees the field really well years into the future. AHIP certainly brings together a great group of thought leaders. I'll look forward to the next one!

With the acquisition of HLTH, here's my top 3 "wishes" for this conference. If you know me, you know HLTH is my go to conference. I feel that no conference does a better job of enabling networking and providing the opportunity to learn more than HLTH. However, that doesn't mean it can't get better. With Hyve Group acquiring HLTH, here are my 3 wishes: 1️⃣ More payer/provider buyers There were distinctly fewer buyers this year than years past. It appears that HLTH keeps moving towards a VC dominated event. I want to see the diverse audience continue, but we need more buyers if HLTH wants to charge premium fees. 2️⃣ 3 new sessions Gather a panel of payer "buyers" and have them share insights on how and why their organizations purchase solutions. Replicate this session with a provider panel and, separately, an employer/TPA panel. This would provide valuable insights for the solution partners in how to better position their solutions with these stakeholders. 3️⃣ Free admission for qualified buyers Want to take HLTH from 12k attendees to 20k? Increase the number of buyers (yes, I know that 2 of my 3 wishes are tied to more buyers . . . that's intentional). There are 220 health plans with 50k or more members. Hundreds of health systems, hundreds of TPAs, and hundreds of ACOs. All of them are underrepresented at HLTH. Make it easy for them to participate. If they hold a budget and they take 4 -15 minute meetings with solution partners (who mostly pay for these events to happen), give them a free ticket to attend. ➡️ What did I miss? What are your wishes for next year?
