EDIT: Please see updates in the comments. American Airlines has confirmed that the accrual benefits of the new program for SMBs and travelers will only apply to direct channels. ORIGINAL POST: Customers of American Airlines' Business Extra (BX) program for small-to-mid-sized businesses (SMBs) woke up today to the news that BX will end on December 15 and will be replaced by AAdvantage Business. There may be an important #airline #distribution angle to this announcement. Whereas BX was a #TMC-inclusive program in that SMB customers could earn the same BX benefits for TMC-booked reservations, it is not at all clear whether that will continue under the new program. The documents which explain the new program (including the attached) reference only earn and redeem processes related to American's website and app. Also, it appears that the concept of a "BX number" is going away and the new AAdvantage Business account will be linked to the traveler's frequent flyer number. American will ask the traveler whether their travel is for "personal" or "business" purposes on its own website/app, and it's not clear how that would translate in a TMC environment, if at all. This was the role of the BX number under the prior program. We are seeking clarification from American on this matter. There are obviously a wide range of potential distribution implications depending upon how they have decided to design the new program.
