The SA node initiates the electrical event that normally causes the heartbeat . The ability of certain myocardial cells to spontaneously discharge electrically (action potential) without the need for external stimulus is called automaticity. The heart is unique in this property. . . All other muscles in the body require stimulation from nerve impulses supplied by the nervous system. If nerves supplying the voluntary muscles are cut, these muscles cease to function; in other words, they are paralyzed. . . In contrast, if the nerves supplying the heart are severed, the heart will continue to beat. The cells that possess the property of automaticity are called pacemaker cells. The SA node serves as the heart’s primary pacemaker and has an intrinsic (natural) rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute. . . Thank you for sharing @ekg_master . . Great post from @thromboclopidogrel! . . The heartbeat is controlled by the electrical system of the heart. This system is made of several parts that tell the muscle of the heart when to contract. The SA node starts the heartbeat causing the atria, or upper chambers of the heart, to contract. The signal then travels through the AV node, the Bundle of His, Bundle Branches, and Purkinje fibers. This causes the ventricles, the lower chambers of the heart, to contract. The flow of electrical signals produces a normal heartbeat. Normal heartbeats can be seen on an electrocardiogram, or ECG. In sinus tachycardia, the SA node fires rapidly, causing an rapid heartbeat. Fast heartbeats can be seen on an Electrocardiogram or ECG. A cardiac thrombus caught embolizing in action!! . . . Notice how the thrombus (a fairly large blood clot) detaches from the ventricular wall and travels through the cardiac chamber circulation and the valve. An embolus is what this thrombus becomes once it’s detached and is free to travel. . . . The Transthoracic echocardiography shown above is the gold standard in visualizing cardiac chambers and especially seeing thrombi. The risk of intracardiac thrombus formation and subsequent embolism are associated with a number of cardiac conditions including acute myocardial infarction, chronic left ventricular aneurysm, dilated cardiomyopathy, infective endocarditis and atrial fibrillation. The biggest risk from cardiac thrombus is distal embolization, resulting in stroke, visceral infarction or distal limb ischemia. Treatment is anticoagulation.
