"The project intends to produce 24 kt/yr of battery-quality lithium hydroxide, by combining extraction from the underground brine with associated geothermal plants under a closed fluid cycle, a lithium extraction plant and a refining plant. It will also produce electricity to cover most of its own consumption and heat for district heating in nearby towns, thereby targeting net-zero emissions. The project will be mostly located in the Upper Rhine Valley of Germany, which is Europe's largest lithium resource. In the frame of the Greet CE project, Falcon-Vision Hungary organised a transnational geothermal value-chain development event on May 24 in Budapest, at the Hungarian Geothermal Association headquarters. Multiple innovative Hungarian SMEs (that have participated in the Greet CE SME market survey), the president of the Hungarian Geothermal Association and multiple Slovenian stakeholders participated in a discussion on how Hungarian geothermal expertise could be utilised in a Slovenian town for district heating purposes. Neighbouring countries in the Pannonian Basin have a lot of potential synergies in terms of cooperating in geothermal project development. The Pannonian Basin has high deep geothermal energy potential. 10% of district heating in Hungary is already supplied by geothermal energy. 🔋 “This report on sourcing lithium from geothermal brine in California Salton Sea Region, also known as Lithium Valley, was successful in shedding light on the potential that exists to secure sufficient amounts of #lithium in an environmentally sustainable manner right here at home in the U.S. Now, the DOE is encouraging groups to go other places and to some extent replicate that kind of investigation, to see what other brine-based lithium resources are out there.” - Berkeley Lab Senior Scientist Peter Nico regarding recent funding awarded to EESA by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Geothermal Technology Office.
