#ClimateChange | 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 | Scientists from EPFL, led by researcher Dr. Hannes Peter, in collaboration with various European universities, uncovered the effects of rising treelines on high-altitude and high-latitude lakes. The study presents the first-ever detailed mapping of the Alpine treeline progression and its implications at a molecular level. Field experiments in Northern Finland and Austria, along with lab tests, were conducted to study the response of lake bacteria to organic carbon from diverse soil types. The findings suggest that as treelines rise, the dissolved organic matter in these lakes changes and affects how the bacteria process the organic carbon, leading to increased CO2 emissions. No surprise: “green” consumption isn’t sustainable. “…Natural resource extraction has soared by almost 400% since 1970… …The stripping of Earth’s natural materials is already responsible for 60% of global heating impacts, including land use change, 40% of air pollution impact, and more than 90% of global water stress and land-related biodiversity loss… …Electric vehicles, for example, use almost 10 times more “critical raw materials” than conventional cars, and reaching net zero transport emissions by 2050 would require increasing critical mineral extraction for them sixfold within 15 years.” We need systems and thinking that work within what we have already extracted. An Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research team found that microalgae at 88° northern latitude, beneath the ice and snow of the Arctic Ocean, could build biomass through photosynthesis as early as March—even with the sun barely above the horizon.  understanding how organisms perform photosynthesis in low light can inspire new technologies for renewable energy, such as developing more efficient solar panels or artificial photosynthesis systems that work under minimal light. Study highlights the importance of the ocean’s tiniest inhabitants Tiny plankton – measuring less than 20µm (or 0.02mm) in diameter – make up the majority of plankton in the ocean and play a critical role in the planet’s health, according to new research. However, scientists say challenges in identifying them have led to them becoming a silent majority that is currently being overlooked when it comes to global ocean policy. The study is one of the first to explore the abundance and importance of these tiny ocean inhabitants around the UK coastline, with the technology capable of monitoring them only having been introduced in around 2010. However, that monitoring has shown that in some instances, 99.98% of plankton abundance – and 71% of plankton biomass – is derived from these tiny cells.
