There’s also a big responsibility for organisers to train their exhibitors on how to exhibit. It`s in the organisers interest that exhibitors are at the top of their game. The average business loses 17% of their clients yearly. In exhibitions we lose about 40% and a good bulk of that is from ill prepared exhibitors. Conferences make no impact to wider business objectives.
…That’s what some of our stakeholders believe.
But WE #eventprofs and #eventmarketers know that isn’t true.
Nothing tells the story of a brand better than an event. It’s the place to engage with current customers, generate leads, increase pipeline, demonstrate thought leadership, launch products in front of your target market, and retain a competitive edge.
So where’s the disconnect?
It’s simple: Our business leaders don’t understand the value and impact of events as we haven’t been demonstrating this to them in THEIR language, rather than ours.
But in fact, events are ✨ pivotal ✨ to our marketing strategies (and overall business objectives) so we need to find more business-savvy ways of proving the value and impact to our leadership.

Visiting an event - the right event - can cut out months of business development, allowing you to get precious time in-person with your target clients and set up meaningful, intentional follow-ups.
💡 However, you should consider a few things:
1. Has it been made clear what the audience profile will be, and what job titles/ level of seniority will be present? 👨💼
2. Have I correctly understood who the budget holders and decision makers are in the value chain of my target audience, and is that a match with whoever is present? 💼
3. Are the event organisers organising meetings or "speed matching" programmes with attendees, so I arrive at the event knowing I have at least a few productive meetings lined up? 🤝
4. Am I sending the right people to this event, if I'm not going myself? Are they able to communicate our values and business proposition? In a scenario where buyer and seller are brought together with the possibility of partnering, a crucial variable is the ability of your salespeople 🌟
5. If we took up booth space, are my booth reps also able to effectively position us with clients - are they senior or seasoned enough to represent the brand if a key prospect approaches? (if you are at a conference with bolted-on booth space outside, also ensure you have people who can attend the booth all day to capture opportunities like this, rather than expecting your BD folks to split their time) 🔊
6. Will I get an attendee list, and will the organiser assist in connecting me with people I missed after the event? 🗒
If you are selective in which events you visit, and consider the above carefully before committing your time and potentially an investment of money, you can more reliably expect ROI. There's a reason the best events see sponsors already rebooking for next year in the days following the event, or even onsite - the value is clear to see!
