Fuels and Additives. Fuel additives have been widely used in the automobile industry for many years. They are added to gasoline or diesel fuel to improve engine performance and reduce emissions. However, there are certain types of fuel additives and wrong additivisation that can cause defects in fuel injectors and spark plugs in your car. Recent challenges have emerged with these components due to improper fuel additivisation that can cause serious and often expensive damage. Types of Fuel Additives There are different types of fuel additives, each designed for a specific function. Some of the most common fuel additives are: 1. Octane booster - It is used to increase the octane rating of gasoline, which reduces engine knocking and improves performance. 2. Fuel stabilizers - They are added to fuel to prevent oxidation, which can cause fuel to degrade and form varnish. 3. Fuel system cleaners - They are designed to remove carbon deposits, water, and other contaminants from the fuel system. 4. Ethanol - Ethanol is added to gasoline to reduce emissions and reduce dependence on petroleum fuels. Wrong Additivisation and its Impact on Fuel Injectors and Spark Plugs One of the biggest challenges with fuel additives is improper additivisation. This means that the wrong type of fuel additive or the wrong amount of an additive is added to fuel, which can cause serious damage to your car's fuel system. For instance, when you add too much ethanol to petrol, it can corrode certain types of fuel injectors that are not designed to handle it. This corrosion can cause fuel injectors to malfunction and even fail. Similarly, adding the wrong type of fuel system cleaner or using too much of it can cause serious damage to spark plugs. Fuel system cleaners can contain chemicals that can erode the insulating ceramic on spark plugs, eventually causing a misfire or a complete failure. Moreover, the wrong type of fuel stabilizer can cause deposits to build up on the spark plugs over time, reducing their ability to conduct electricity and leading to misfires or carbon tracking. Fuel additives can be an effective way to improve engine performance and reduce emissions, but it's important to use them correctly. Failure to use the proper fuel additive or using too much of it can cause serious damage to fuel injectors and spark plugs. Dr. G.K. Ayetor Isaac Blankson, MSc. Emil Jackson Adanuvor
