I’m currently listening to a podcast/audiobook inspired by Továrna na lži (The Lie Factory) by sociologist Vojtěch Pecka for the second time while doing some administrative work and prepping for university. This book has captured my attention for a while now, and I recently had the chance to buy a hardcover copy at the Troja Art Book Fair. The combination of deep insight and great art makes it a prized possession. For anyone who understands Czech and is curious about the craft behind climate disinformation, I highly recommend taking a look. In short, The Lie Factory reveals how the production of climate disinformation works through concrete examples from both the Czech Republic and the global context. You may have heard arguments that global warming isn't caused by the increase of greenhouse gases. Some claim the sun or cosmic rays are to blame, while others deny global warming altogether. Occasionally, these claims even reference scientific literature or are made by respected scientists. However, the vast majority of climate science research confirms that human activity is the primary driver of climate change. Yet, accusations of data falsification and dramatization persist, adding to the chaos. Sociological research and investigative projects from recent years have shown that this confusion is no accident. Many findings point to a well-crafted political strategy designed to protect the interests of the fossil fuel industry. Its main tool? The creation of uncertainty and confusion. #ClimateChange

The effects of war on climate I was delighted to once again be a guest speaker on Al Jazeera Balkans in a recent episode of ‘Kontekst,’ where we discussed a critical and often overlooked issue: the devastating effects of wars and armed conflicts on the environment, and how this impacts global efforts to combat climate change. While wars primarily bring human tragedy, their environmental toll is profound and impossible to ignore. Today, the effects of conflicts extend far beyond the regions where they occur, causing long-lasting damage to ecosystems that further worsens the climate crisis. Forests, water sources, and biodiversity suffer extensive harm, making recovery even more difficult. Wars and armed conflicts contribute to the rise of emissions from military operations, infrastructure destruction, and population displacement, all which hamper efforts to mitigate climate change. The war supply chain, encompassing heavy industries like metal, construction, technology, transport, and over-exploitation of natural resources, fossil fuels and critical materials, add significant amount of emissions. Conflicts divert essential resources, both financial and human, away from climate action, delaying progress on climate adaptation and mitigation, particularly in vulnerable regions. The environmental scars left by wars are long-lasting, meaning that recovery will require not just peacebuilding but also ecosystem restoration, adding further urgency to both diplomatic and environmental agendas. As we continue to struggle with climate change effects, the intersection of conflict and environmental degradation is becoming even more critical.
