Nick Hazell, the former founder and CEO of plant-based meat company v2food, has set his sights on a new frontier in sustainable technology: algae. His latest venture, Algenie, is developing a novel growth platform that he hopes can produce algae in quantities large enough to potentially replace fossil fuels in the production of plastics and other materials. The startup has just raised $1.1 million in early funding from investors including Better Bite Ventures and the University of Technology Sydney. Read the full story from Bronwen Clune 👇

Investment announcement: ÄIO Another addition to SmartCap Green Fund portfolio as we invested in ÄIO to contribute to: - transition to a circular economy by using natural resources in production more efficiently and - protection & restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem by conserving nature and preventing its deterioration, but - equally important...food security! With precision fermentation, Äio uses industrial side streams and up-cycles low-value by-products mainly from wood and agricultural industry, and turns these into valuable fats and oils. ÄIO aims to reduce the use of palm and coconut oil, mineral oils and animal fats in food and cosmetics industry by replacing them with sustainable and healthier alternatives. The latest funding round was backed by SmartCap, 2C Ventures, Voima Ventures and Nordic Foodtech VC and raised funding will be used to build a demo plant in Estonia.

Here is some insight into what Biochar ventures, one of the Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) technologies, look like based on the Net Zero Insights database. There are definitely more biochar ventures in South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Let's map the missing ones in the comments section below!
🖤 There are more than 44 biochar ventures who have raised $198m to date with $87m raised over 2023! This is (3/6) of the CDR ecosystem maps I've been putting together for CO₂RE - The Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub using the excellent data from the folks over at Net Zero Insights 👌 Who did I miss? Scaling biochar production means securing sustainable and innovative feedstock supplies that don't compete with regenerative agriculture uses or mess up the LCA, optimizing pyrolysis and production processes to ensure a quality output, navigating regulatory landscapes, getting past scale up to economies of scale & lower costs, and at the market level - developing incentives & buyer channels for biochar, its co-products, and CDR credits. Curious what people think: how scalable is biochar as a CDR approach, and how does it fit into wider regenerative agriculture ecosystem? And what challenges to scale have I missed? Astha Wagle
