We are delighted that one of our DB pension clients has achieved a £47.5m buy-in with insurer Canada Life for the remaining uninsured members of the Scheme. Capital Cranfield Trustees' Professional Trustee Kevin Wesbroom who is Chair of Trustees for the Scheme, said that while market movements brought the transaction into sight, it was ultimately a generous cash injection from the Employer that made it possible. He added that getting the deal across the line was a testament to “a real team effort” from the Employer, Trustees and the Scheme’s advisers Gallagher, Osborne Clarke and Aon. The world of pensions is ever evolving so each Tuesday we shine the spotlight on a current key issue and share our perspective for #trusteetrendstuesday. Recently Trustee Director Alan Baker was pleased to join Isio’s webinar on managing defined benefit (DB) surplus. The session covered the perspectives from a trustee, sponsor and adviser with Isio’s Stewart Hastie hosting Alan, Phil Aspin and Emily McGuire. This comes following The Department for Work and Pensions’ consultation on plans designed to help make DB surplus extraction easier. The panel covered: - the circumstances under which running on beyond buy-out might work best - introduction of a statutory over-ride that gives all schemes the opportunity to distribute surplus on a regular ongoing basis a “reverse recovery plan” - the noise around discretionary increases - greater pension scheme investment in productive assets - 100% PPF underpin View the webinar below and do reach out to Alan Baker with any questions. Alan chairs LawDeb’s internal Journey Planning Working Group alongside Lynne Rawcliffe and is well places to talk all things endgame.
Isio recently hosted a webinar on the Government’s ‘Options for Defined Benefit schemes’ consultation which aims to make it easier to distribute surplus assets on an ongoing basis. Stewart Hastie chaired the session with Matt Brown providing an overview of what this means for pension schemes and we were delighted to be joined by our panel of guest speakers: Phil Aspin (CFO United Utilities and Chair of the 100GROUP Pensions Committee), Alan Baker (Trustee Director at The Law Debenture Group) and Emily McGuire (Head of Investment at Isio) who shared their insights from a sponsor, trustee and advisor perspective on the opportunities and practical implications of running DB schemes on over the medium to long-term. Another example of greed and basic disregard for a client. Too often I see examples of these 'boutique' too good to be true investments. How is it possible for a FCA qualified Adviser to offer such poor advice and sleep easy knowing full well it is not in the best interests of their client? There has to be better safeguarding measures introduced to stop final salary pensions being transferred to charlatans like these.

Alan Greenlees collects views on the buy-out market for the remainder of 2024. I am seeing the impacts of administration constraints at the insurers and Trustees taking into account non-price factors when selecting an insurer. It will be interesting to see new joiners enter the market and the impact this has on capacity, pricing and decision factors for Trustees. #ZEDRA #buyout #insights

In my last Private Markets post, we explored different types of private market assets and why they've opened up as a more realistic investment prospect for defined contribution (DC) pension schemes in recent years. In this article, we'll delve into some of the main opportunities presented by private market assets. We'll also look at the challenges around investing in this space and how Long-Term Asset Funds (LTAFs) could help address many of these issues.
