I'm already a big fan of SUNTORY BEVERAGE & FOOD EUROPE's new CEO Pierre DECROIX. A waffle-cutting straight talker. Why become CEO? "To make an impact." Why pursue sustainability? "Because it's the right thing to do." Pierre also talks about his vision for "sustainable, profitable growth". And he is right: sustainability needs to be seen as a driver of profitability, not an add-on. This week, I interviewed SBFE's CSO Michelle Norman. She was as driven and focussed as the CEO. Brewing a better world at the Heineken AGM... Yesterday, I represented the De Vereniging van Beleggers voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling (VBDO) - the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development. VBDO volunteers ask questions about sustainability topics at AGMs at Dutch stock-listed companies. Here's my reflection in 3 words. 🍺EverGreen: As with many AGMs, the first part of the meeting was focused on Heineken's multi-year strategy to create long-term, sustainable value in a fast-changing world and grow stronger. And on the results achieved and challenges faced in 2023. ⁉️Engaging: Several people asked questions about the strategy and results. Denise Reike and I asked questions about biodiversity, living wage, and lobbying (VBDO's focus topics this AGM season). The answers were elaborate and extremely well-prepared. Not everything we hoped for, yet some commitments for greater transparency on these topics. And there was room for spontaneous engagement as well. After the AGM closed, CEO Dolf van den Brink and CFO Harold van den Broek thanked us for our questions (and the way we asked them). 🎤Entertaining: As happens in lots of places with microphones, many questions were statements. Some were quite hilarious; some were just time-consuming. And as expected with a beverage company, drinks were served at the 'borrel' after the AGM. Nice to catch up and meet people there, like Jan-Willem Vosmeer, Sonia Thimmiah, Charlotte Kwist, and Jose Federico Castillo. I look forward to working with the VBDO team to monitor Heineken's next steps. And to join the 2024 AGM for follow-up questions.

Heineken for breakfast? 🔥🦁🔥 Did you know that Heineken's founder, Alfred Heineken, was a sustainability trailblazer in construction? 🍃🏠 In the 1960s, he collaborated with architect John Habraken to address the issue of discarded beer bottles in Dutch Antilles. Inspired by the need for recycling, they created the WOBO bottle – a reusable bottle designed to serve as a building block after use. 🌱🍻 Despite initial challenges, Heineken had 100,000 WOBO bottles made in 1964, marking an early venture into sustainable packaging for construction. This visionary initiative, though met with skepticism, resulted in Heineken building a garden house from WOBO bottles in his own backyard. 🏡💚 Fast forward a decade, and the project gained recognition as one of the first industrial efforts for recyclable packaging in construction.
