The period from 1966 to 1983 was a time of transition and expansion for The Walt Disney Company, marked by the realization of Walt Disney's final dream project and the continued growth of the company's legacy. Following the death of Walt Disney in 1966, his brother Roy O. Disney took on a leadership role to ensure the completion of Walt Disney World in Florida. Roy recognized the significance of fulfilling Walt's vision and, despite facing his own health challenges, oversaw the opening of Walt Disney World on October 1, 1971. This massive undertaking included the Magic Kingdom theme park, resorts, and various recreational facilities, solidifying Disney's presence on the East Coast and establishing the company as a major player in the global entertainment industry. One of the standout features of Walt Disney World was the Epcot theme park, which opened in 1982. Epcot, short for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, was a departure from traditional theme park concepts. Walt Disney originally envisioned Epcot as a city that would combine futuristic technology, urban planning, and innovative community living. While the final realization of Epcot differed from Walt's original vision, the park retained elements of his forward-thinking ideas. Epcot was divided into two main areas: Future World, which focused on technology and innovation, and World Showcase, which celebrated cultures from around the globe. The park aimed to educate and entertain visitors, emphasizing a sense of optimism for the future. Attractions like Spaceship Earth, Mission: SPACE, and The World of Motion showcased technological advancements and exploration. The completion of Walt Disney World and the opening of Epcot marked the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of theme park experiences. These achievements also underscored Disney's ability to create immersive environments that combined entertainment, technology, and storytelling. Roy O. Disney passed away just three months after the opening of Epcot, leaving a void in the company's leadership. His passing marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for The Walt Disney Company. Despite the loss of its visionary founders, Disney continued to evolve and adapt, drawing on the foundation laid by Walt and Roy to navigate the changing landscape of the entertainment industry. Could entertainment companies offer more to local communities through CRE? Netflix has released their plans for their first permanent destination. Located in Philadelphia, this 120K sqft commercial footprint will house amusement rooms, a theater, dining options and a marketplace. It’s the first of several more to come from the entertainment giant. But could others follow the same path? Would Hulu or AppleTV join the move and create a commercial footprint outside traditional entertainment hubs? And of course, with the burgeoning VR technology in mind, could this develop into the future of amusement parks? High-quality amusement offerings that could enter multiple markets with lower barriers to entry is certainly worth conceptualizing.
