Today marks my official last day as a Product Management intern at Iron Mountain, and I couldn't be more grateful for this amazing experience. Over the past few months, Throughout my internship, I’ve had the chance to immerse myself in various aspects of product management and develop key skills that will shape my career moving forward. Some highlights include: 🔹 Product Lifecycle Management: I’ve been involved in managing products through their entire lifecycle—from initial concept and development to launch and iteration. This hands-on experience has given me a comprehensive understanding of how to guide a product from idea to market success. 🔹 Strategic Planning: Analyzing market trends and customer needs, and contributing to the formulation of product strategies that align with business goals has been an integral part of my role. 🔹 Cross-Functional Collaboration: Working with engineering, marketing, and design teams has strengthened my ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively to bring products to life. 🔹 Data-Driven Decision Making: I’ve learned to leverage data to inform product decisions, from interpreting user feedback and analyzing performance metrics to refining product features and strategies. 🔹 Agile Methodologies: Embracing agile practices has been crucial in managing product backlogs, participating in sprints, and ensuring timely and effective delivery of product updates. Thank you Anke Conzelmann, Jorge Londono, & Melisa Harder for the never ending support and mentorship throughout this entire summer. As I wrap up this chapter, I’m excited to take these skills and experiences into future opportunities and continue growing in the field of product management.

💡Following my post last week about the entry-level product person I’ve been helping I was having a think about how graduates are getting into Product Management… *also thanks again to those who helped out last week🙏 So, here’s my advice to aspiring Product Managers: ✅ Don’t worry too much about what degree you do – keep it broad, employers like STEM, and if you are that way inclined then CS is 👑 ✅ Get involved in entrepreneurship organisations/society’s ✅ Go above and beyond to get on a technology (ideally product) internship ✅ Get yourself some qualifications across agile frameworks and something product-related ✅ Explore the coding world, get some basic skills and understanding (do the same with data) ✅ Speak to other product people – attend events, connect with product people, connect with product recruiters (me👋📩) ✅ Be open-minded with you first product role, it’s about getting the basic level experience and getting your foot in the door 🚀Comment below if you have any other advice for entry-level product people!

I Don’t Think You Are a Product Manager! A few days ago, I had a session with a newbie in Product Management. Let’s call him K (you didn’t think I’d reveal his full name, did you? 😉). K has been struggling to grow in the #PM space. What was supposed to be a 3-month internship has now stretched into 9 months. Frustrated and on the verge of quitting, K thought this space might not be for him. During our session, I identified his weaknesses—key skills vital to excelling as a product manager. Let me share these insights: 1. #leadership As a PM, your leadership style can make or break your product. Influence others, listen attentively to your team, and be open to learning from them. Strong leadership can help you navigate through hurdles successfully. 2. #communication Effective communication creates a positive working environment and ensures success. Regularly communicate with your stakeholders to keep everyone aligned and informed. 3. #timemanagement If you struggle with managing your time, managing a product will be even more challenging. Develop strong time management skills to ensure productivity and efficiency. 4. #Empathy Understanding and empathizing with your team and users is crucial. It helps you create products that truly meet the needs of your customers. After our session, K felt rejuvenated. He’s now eager to work on his weaknesses and even picked up the book “How to Be an Effective Manager” by @Greg Blencoe . I can’t wait to hear K’s success story in three months. Remember, K could be you. I mean YOU. You’re not truly a Product Manager until you start paying attention to your interpersonal skills. It's Monday, and I hope this story inspires someone today. How to know if Product Management is the right career for you? 2 years back, I was in my last semester, still contemplating if I should go with marketing or explore other domains. I was hearing the word "product management" quite a lot. So I decided to research upon it. Here are the 4 steps I took to ensure product management was the right fit: 1- I watched a lot of YouTube videos to understand the role and responsibilities of a PM, and day to day in their work life. 2- I talked to people who were already in the product management field to understand more deeply about the role, and the challenges that comes with it. 3- I went for a PM internship to see how does it actually feel to work as a PM. And I was completely fine with wasting 2-3 months of my career if it didn't turned out to be the right fit. 4- During the internship I shadowed the product managers to see how they are going about their responsibilities as a PM. Because the fact is you don't get to experience the full product lifecycle as an Intern So after taking these 4 steps, I was sure that this is what I'm meant to do. And here I am now... Working in the product management and still loving it every single day.

Being successful in the field of product management is a constant journey, Congratulations to me 🕺🕺, I recently accomplished a significant milestone. I've finished the Product Management course that LinkedIn Learning offers on behalf of the prestigious Aha professional organization. More than simply knowledge was gained from this experience; it was a chance to fully immerse myself in the system of product strategy, development cycles, and productive teamwork. Every module improved my abilities and sharpened my approach to product management, serving as a stepping stone. It's impossible to directly become a PRODUCT MANAGER today... ...if you're a student or an inexperienced aspiring product manager! Instead, here's what's achievable today: ✅ You can start learning from the free resources on the internet to understand the basic product management concepts. ✅ You can apply for product management internships to learn new things and gain practical experience. ✅ You can create a small product (website/app) of your own to implement your learnings. ✅ You can connect with established product managers to learn from their experiences. ✅ You can participate in product challenges to enhance your problem-solving skills and develop product sense. ✅ You can work on your resume to target it for product roles. ✅ You can optimize your LinkedIn profile for creating your personal brand as an aspiring product professional. It’ll only take you around 2-3 hours a day to begin with these small steps. However, In the next 6 months, you'll have: ➡️ A good understanding of the product management concepts ➡️ Product management internship experience ➡️ A small working product of your own ➡️ A good network of product professionals ➡️ An idea of how to solve real-world product challenges ➡️ AND a resume and LinkedIn profile optimized for product roles ❌ Don't say: "I want to become a PRODUCT MANAGER today" ✔️ Instead say: "I want to invest 2 hours to LEARN PRODUCT MANAGEMENT today" Remember the way to win here is simple: Take small steps daily towards your big long-term goal! As a product management student, I had the privileged to be well informed on the major performances of a product manager. I learnt how to identify a problem and the channels through which a problem could be solved. I learnt the importance of team work and collaboration to excel as a Product Manager. I learnt to hone the roles of a product manager to be a visionary, a strategist and a problem solver. I learnt the different stages of development for tangible and intangible products. I learnt the essence of market research and competitive analysis. I also learnt wireframing using Belasmiq I learnt to write a PRD (product requirements development). I learnt product sketches which we refer to as a prototypes. And I learnt to build a user-persona and a user flow. I also learnt the dynamic skills of product manager which includes communication, problem solving, leadership, data analysis, prioritization an more. I learnt the methodologies of the AGILE development. The list is endless. My name is Nafisat Shaibu and I am a certified Product Manager. While I am glad I took the path of one too many potentials, I'll love to put in these potentials to actions. I love to learn and I love to practicalize my knowledge.
