The APEX statement serves as a true north to deliver on my promises of bringing the results my clients seek sooner than they would have expected. It also serves as a checkpoint, where I ask, “Will I be able to help this person or organization get better faster?” One gap in hewing close to an organization’s big “V” vision comes less from not keeping it top of mind than from not setting a vision (with a small “v”) for every long-range, important and complex project or team effort. Note the criteria here. One does not need a vision to define every effort or project. For example, a social media outreach effort may not, but one should have a vision for the overarching marketing program of which it is a part.

Let your Customers Market for You. Focus on providing your clientele (business & individuals) with the best experience ever, so they HAVE to tell their friend. I know that I'm more likely to buy a product if my buddy tells me about it. That's why customer retention, loyalty, and engagement are so key. They lead to word-of-mouth marketing. Not every post, blog, or ad campaign needs to drive new sales right away-- focus on engaging your current customer base with valuable content, so when they're ready to buy or know someone who is, they will tell a friend about your company. HubSpot calls this the flywheel effect (shoutout Jeetu Mahtani for teaching me this last summer).

Hot Take… Even though this isn’t our typical hot takes episode, Jake Ross, founder of Build You Marketing, has a unique take on marketing. Digital marketing should be used to grow your community base, and the growth of your customer base will naturally follow. Utilizing mediums such as social media, email marketing, and public relations campaigns can serve to grow the amount of “fans” of your business. The goal is that a potential customer will hear about your business from a friend, rather than just an advertisement. The secret to this strategy being successful is to create content that is meaningful, likable and valuable to your customers. Do not worry about the quantity of engagements with the content, but rather focus on deepening the quality.
