Countdown to #CAWG50 – After establishment, CAWG began work in several priority areas that the Board had identified: legislative advocacy and government relations, fair and uniform grading standards for winegrape quality acceptance and pricing at crush, industry marketing and promotion, and viticulture research and education. Progress on grape pricing and quality acceptance was made through the legislative and regulatory process. According to Jerry Fry, founding CAWG member, "Two of the biggest achievements during CAWG's early years were the creation of the California Grape Crush Report, and third-party grading and inspection for winegrapes if their price was affected by rot and material other than grapes (MOG)." Legislation to establish the Crush Report, signed in 1976, was carried by State Senator Clare Berryhill of Ceres with support and testimony from many of CAWG's founding leaders including Keehn, Fry, and Al Scheid of Scheid Vineyards. Each week, CAWG will share history, memories, and showcase the many people who have shaped CAWG's journey as we countdown to the November 21 celebration. Special thank you to Reserve Vineyard Sponsor, Bayer, for supporting CAWG’s 50th celebration anniversary! #CAWG50 #WinegrapeGrowers #DrinkCAWine Sponsorship opportunities, tickets, and more information can be found here: https://bit.ly/3VwyFaB

Success in the dynamic world of winegrape farming requires consistency and fair representation. The grower-owned cooperative Allied Grape Growers (AGG) is now an essential component of the California wine business. Assuring members' voices are heard and providing a reliable forum for grape marketing, AGG is crucial to the sector's stability. As a cooperative, AGG gives top priority to its members' interests in every transaction and directly shares earnings with them. By cutting down unnecessary expenses, this strategy benefits individual producers and enhances the industry's overall sustainability. In an exclusive interview with the International Bulk Wine & Spirits Show, Jeff Bitter, President of AGG, delves into the advantages of this cooperative model. He discusses how it promotes growers' well-being, guarantees equitable representation, and supports the wine industry's long-term stability. Jeff also talks about the advancements and challenges shaping the future of winegrape cultivation. By emphasizing sustainability and group success, AGG is paving the way for a more secure and prosperous wine industry. Why More Companies Are Shifting to Stakeholder Capitalism—It’s Just Better Business Writing recently in the The New York Times, wine critic Eric Asimov explains why so many wineries are seeking B Lab or related certifications demonstrating their commitment to all stakeholders. While the industry has for many years pursued certifications for environmental sustainability, he writes, “Far less attention has been paid over the years to how wineries treated the people who are doing the actual farming and production work. It’s been an enormous oversight, particularly as agricultural workers continue to be prime targets for exploitation.” He adds, “Recognizing the long history of exploitation, and perhaps wanting to codify their social values along with their environmental and agricultural practices, a growing number of wine producers have sought certification demonstrating their commitment to what many call social sustainability.” Sustainability is just as much about people as it is the environment, isn't it? #stakeholdercapitalism #sustainability #wine https://lnkd.in/eErkgMe4

Grapes are the highest-value fruit crop in the U.S., and represent 36% of the value of non-citrus fruits. The American wine industry is focused intensively on sustainability—economic, environmental, and social—as responsible citizens and stewards of the Earth. For decades individual wineries, trade associations and educational institutions have developed programs to protect and enhance farmland, water, and other parts of the environment we need and cherish. https://lnkd.in/eWuTNBkq

Hear, hear! This issue of corruption of the governance model for farmers' peak bodies is occurring elsewhere too. For example, on irrigators councils. How can farmers defend their constitutional rights to water if irrigators councils are being dominated by traditionally "non residents?" Foreign corporate agribusinesses in particular may not be interested in an R&D cooperative that allows our families to compete with their foreign investments in corporate R&D. Wake up Australia. Our farming families are being attacked and that is an issue that affects every Australian.
The imbalance within Wine Australia with growers representation very much in the minority has been an increasing concern; those concerns have fallen on deaf ears. Now we have the hard work of the professional dedicated team at AWRI under attack. Increased influence by the major corporate wineries on political decision making, regardless of the party in power must be considered as the underlying cause. 'Industry Rationalisation', 'Increased Efficiencies' and 'Improved Utilisation of Limited Resources' are the buzz words utilised to justify the underlying causal mechanisms...but what of the causal effects on the long term sustainability of small growers and small cellar doors? The duplicity of Governments of all political persuasions bowing to corporate influence must be identified and prevented. https://lnkd.in/gcaZPr4M
