Center for AI and Digital Policy Europe’s Post

⭐ Today, first #EuropeanAIOffice's webinar on EU #AIAct, focusing on risk assessment and compliance requirements for both high-risk AI systems & general-purpose AI models with systemic risks. [For those who could not attend see key takeways by European Commission Chrysi Chrysochou, CIPP/E https://lnkd.in/d7VRH5HF, recorded webinar available here: https://lnkd.in/eGGxGjhU ] 2 key points: 🔥 In both cases, prevention and mitigation of negative impact on fundamental rights are key 👉 CAIDP Europe is looking forward to knowing more about the EU AI Office's insights on the necessary safeguards to be operationalised in order to ensure fundamental rights protection ⚠ Risk assessment and compliance with EU AI Act do not make fundamental rights violations permissible. Fundamental rights protection is guaranteed through the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and relevant EU legislation that ought to be respected. 👉 With regard to standards, CAIDP Europe is looking forward to knowing how the EU AI Office will implement the recent case law of the EU Court of Justice which ensures free access to harmonised standards (CJEU Grand Chamber, Case C‑588/21 P, 5 March 2024, https://lnkd.in/dSK-F9tS) Citizens' access to standards is crucial to enable them to verify 1/ whether a given product or service complies with the requirements of the EU AI Act; 2/ whether the standards comply with the requirements of the EU AI Act. As a civil society organisation, CAIDP Europe is committed to make sure of it. 🔥 As the basic structure of the EU AI Office has just been revealed (https://lnkd.in/dzqQhQhW), CAIDP Europe is looking forward to getting more information on where fundamental rights protection fits in, in between the AI regulation & compliance unit and the AI safety unit, without mentioning the unit on AI for societal good. 👉 Human-centric AI governance is key to ensure proper application & enforcement of the EU AI Act 👉 CAIDP Europe applauds the timely establishment of the EU AI Office but regrets the opacity that has surrounded it. We are looking forward to a real consultation process on the contents of each unit, and transversal coordination on fundamental rights protection within the DG and with other DGs Dr. Tatjana Evas Antoine-Alexandre André Josep Soler Garrido Delia Fano Yela Kilian Gross Thierry Boulangé Frederico Oliveira da Silva Angela Müller Daniel Leufer Ella Jakubowska Fanny Hidvégi Catherine Miller Alexandra Toth Rose Boutboul Lina Chtioui Marc Rotenberg Selin Ozbek Cittone Giuliano Borter Giulia Gentile Sofia Ranchordas Carissa Véliz Prof Sandra Wachter Prof Brent Mittelstadt Björn Lundqvist Ursula Pachl Guillermo Beltrà Emilio De Capitani Martin Hullin Oreste Pollicino Mark Dempsey Dr. Laura Caroli
