Did you know that goods from around the world make their way to Rotterdam, one of the busiest ports in Europe, before continuing their journey to Wörth am Rhein Port for distribution? It's fascinating to witness firsthand how this intricate network connects distant markets and fuels international commerce. As I walked along the bustling docks, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale of operations and the efficiency with which goods are handled. From container ships to freight trains, every mode of transportation plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth flow of goods through this vital hub. Beyond its economic significance, Wörth am Rhein Port also holds a special place in the hearts of locals, serving as a symbol of resilience and innovation in the face of changing times. It's a testament to the power of human ingenuity and collaboration in shaping the world we live in. I had goosebumps standing there yesterday! In front of pictures of our new Aurora Class vessels already in the water in China ready for global sailing, it almost feels surreal. But it is actually happening. Right now. No futuristic vision. No hypothetical project. No pledge for what we must do in the future. The first Aurora Class vessel, the largest and most environmentally friendly PCTC ever built, will be in commercial operations in only a few months. Today I had the pleasure of speaking about how we got here. And how we got here so fast. Faster than we ever could imagine. How was that possible? Through collaboration. Cross-border collaboration. Through pooling highly technical and ambitious partners Pollution doesn’t care about borders. And it certainly doesn’t care about cultural differences. Or any other differences for that matter. The Aurora Class project is a clear example on how we can embrace the differences to everyone's advantage. Explore them to change the future At Höegh Autoliners, we are lucky to have a very close collaboration – and a great relationship - with China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI). Without them, the Aurora Class would have been what several people deemed it in 2021: Impossible. Together we are making the impossible possible. It's been four years since I first spoke to Höegh Autoliners’ CEO Andreas Enger about building the vessels of the future. And now the future is here. Happening as I'm on stage speaking about it. Sailing for sustainability, transforming our industry. Making deep-sea transportation sustainable and net zero. The Aurora Class project is a testament to what we can achieve when we unite for a common cause. Global collaboration is crucial for progress. The world needs to accelerate the green transition. And together with the rest of the world and our highly skilled Chinese partners we are shaping the future of maritime decarbonization and a net zero future. We proudly announce our next special exhibition: 200 years of the Reederei F. Laeisz shipping company On deck 2 of the museum from March the 21st to September the 15th 2024.   It all began in Hamburg in 1824 with a business selling top hats. Within a few decades, this became one of the most important and today oldest shipping companies in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. The House of F. Laeisz soon maintained shipping connections all over the world and was involved in the founding of other well-known shipping companies, including Hamburg Süd and Hapag-Lloyd AG. The company became well known for its Flying-P-Liners, fast sailing ships that were famous and admired until the 1930s, especially on the wheat voyage to Australia and the route around Cape Horn to the west coast of South America. Later, the shipping company entered the trade in bananas and other refrigerated cargoes. Today, F. Laeisz is fully focussed on the future. Large car ferries, bulkers and gas tankers characterise the fleet. Liquefied gas transport is becoming increasingly important, as are modern dual-fuel drives and the reduction of CO2 emissions for new generations of ships. The company is certain that the future will belong to chemicals such as green methanol and green ammonia as fuels for large ocean-going vessels. Since 1977, Italy’s HSR has morphed the mundane into marvel, making a near 500km commute between Milan and Rome a breeze - all at the wallet-friendly price of 45 euros (about 74 AUD). Now, that's what I call a game changer! ⏱️💸 Let’s pivot from "Why can't we?" to "How will we?" It’s high time we advocate and rally for Australian HSR.
