💚 As Operations Professionals, sometimes we get disconnected from the real-world effects of our actions. It's easy to sit in an office and make decisions that we don't have directly feel the effects of. Whether it is skipping an inspection, a not so temporary 'temporary fix', bypassing a safety system or going with a cheaper supplier/contractor. 99% of the time, everything works out fine, on the 15th June 2017, we woke up to a time when it didn't. Every year that has passed since then, I like to take time to reflect, not just on those who lost their lives that fateful night, or that charred building that scarred the skyline for so long, but also on the systemic failures that led to such a tragedy. We must remember that our choices, even those that seem insignificant, can have far-reaching consequences. The Grenfell Tower fire was a stark reminder of the importance of our roles as Operations Professionals. It is essential that we learn from this tragedy to prevent anything like it from happening again. This means committing to thorough inspections, ensuring temporary fixes are resolved, maintaining safety systems, and choosing suppliers and contractors based on quality and safety standards, not just cost. As we reflect on Grenfell, let us recommit to a culture of safety, responsibility and respect. Let us honor the memories of those lost by ensuring their deaths were not in vain. We all carry an ethical obligation to protect lives and create environments where such a catastrophe can never occur again. 💚
7 years ago, 72 lives lost. As Richard Millet KC, counsel to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry said: “Each and every one of the deaths that occurred in Grenfell Tower on the 14th June 2017 was avoidable” We must remember those that lost their lives and strive do better. 💚 If you’ve not read Peter Apps book - Show Me The Bodies: How We Let Grenfell Happen or Gill Kernick’s Catastrophe and Systemic Change: Learning from the Grenfell Tower Fire and Other Disasters - I thoroughly recommend them as essential reading and reflection.

There are still tons of dead trees and brush all over the Carolinas and Tennessee that haven’t been cleaned up. If we get a drought in the next few weeks or months, all that dry debris could easily turn into a major wildfire risk. And it's not just about the trees—there's still a lot of structural damage and issues with infrastructure that make the area even more vulnerable.
