Garbage take. Not normally one to chime in on articles that I think are misguided at best and propaganda at worst, but I can think of so many major US cities that directly refute this argument, including Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, DC, Chicago... the list goes on. Trying to make a point using only the two largest cities in the US as representative of all urban markets is bad science and bad journalism. Seeing vacant but evenly distributed commercial space in one city with its own unique economic environment and then centralized and thriving commercial space in another and then projecting that onto every single city in the US is wildly irresponsible. Surprised this is coming out of Harvard of all places. The reason all the aforementioned cities are so relatively expensive to live in is because there is genuine demand for this style of living (especially among young people like me) and a dearth of North American cities that meet those criteria. I'd agree that that makes surviving as a commercial business more difficult if we didn't have so much evidence that all the aforementioned "inefficiencies" are just passed directly onto the consumers anyway as price markups. The point of the buzzworded-to-death "15-minute city" is to put people next to the things they need to live - work, food, schools, transit, AND commercial space. This isn't a revolutionary OR untested concept, it's just been given a new name recently. Cities where you have to travel miles and miles to get your basic needs met are pretty unique to North America. Separating people from needed commercial space creates food deserts, reinforces class hierarchy and segregation, and generally makes living more cumbersome and expensive to the people actually purchasing goods and services. The "questionable economics" has everything to do with who is being burdened with an "inefficient" distribution of resources - humans or businesses. Humans need to come first. Always. Completely sick of arguments against trying to fix things that don't work because it's "too difficult". I don't mean to fall into the trap of being a "reply guy" on social media but this is the stuff I care about and I have a wider reach among professionals here than I do ranting to strangers like I normally do.
The hottest idea in urban planning, the 15-minute city, doesn't reflect how urban markets work, says Harvard's Rachel Meltzer.

Loads of interesting questions being surfaced in the conversations so far. To name a few: - How do we bridge the gap between the speed at which innovation teams operate with the speed of city administration processes. Today they don't connect! - How do we document learning? Not just activities and results - How do we use, analyse and simplify data to aid decisions, without loosing the context - How do we engage effectively on one side the local communities, and on the other side the leaders ( Governments and others) effectively - How do we reconcile the time it takes to see visible impact with the need for "quick wins" and measurable difference to ignite and sustain hope .... and many more Later In the day CHÔRA Design will facilitate a workshop to deep-dive into the different factors that impact the sustainability of Transformation Programs over time and make them "fragile", so we can start looking for ways to address or minimize them. #antifragility #urbantransformation
