How Does a Successful Startup Team Look Like? Per Belbin, a successful team is one where nine distinct roles are effectively distributed among its members. These roles ensure that all aspects of a project are covered, from idea generation to execution and evaluation. Action-Oriented Roles Shaper: Drives the team forward and challenges the status quo. Implementer: Turns ideas into actionable plans. Completer Finisher: Ensures tasks are completed with attention to detail. People-Oriented Roles Coordinator: Clarifies goals and delegates tasks. Team Worker: Promotes team cohesion and resolves conflicts. Resource Investigator: Explores new opportunities and connections. Thought-Oriented Roles Plant: Brings innovative ideas and creative solutions. Monitor Evaluator: Analyzes and evaluates options impartially. Specialist: Provides in-depth knowledge and expertise. It’s so easy to delegate the direct interactions with your customers to the team and that’s also the worst thing you can do as a leader. Unless you have a first-hand understanding of the perceived value of your solution, and how it shifts by use case, vertical, customer segment and over time, you’re not really running that business.
There's one trap that I see SO many great founders get caught up in... Don't fall in love with your own tech so much that you forget to be a business. There is no shortage of companies I've seen that have big ideas from bright people that get caught in the dead end of endless R&D. The founders get lost tinkering with their tech. But what are they NOT doing? The only thing that matters: Talking to customers. Founders stuck in the research phase are not generating value for a customer. They aren't shipping product. They aren't iterating new features. So instead of a successful business, they end up with an expensive research project 🥴 If you're a founder, you need to balance developing great tech with go-to-market urgency. And the best way to do that is by 👏 talking 👏 to 👏 customers 👏 Find out what fundamental problem your tech is solving for them, then let that be your target. It'll keep your focus laser sharp.

In the race to build a strong startup team, the focus often centers on how tough it is to find top engineering or AI/ML talent. However, findings from our latest Costanoa Ventures survey of 30 early-stage #founders reveal a more nuanced picture. While 43% find technical hires challenging, many others report facing greater difficulties with non-technical roles like UX, product design, and sales. This raises an interesting question: is engineering talent truly the hardest to hire, or are other roles presenting even bigger challenges 🤔 ? Curious about what others are experiencing or hearing. ⚡ Shout out to our fabulous Summer Fellow Amanda Paolino for putting this together! One of the biggest challenges in tech startups is the… Disconnect between engineering and marketing teams. Engineers are focused on building the product, while marketers are tasked with selling it. But here's the thing… When these two teams work in silos, everyone loses. The key to success is bridging the gap and fostering collaboration. When engineers understand the customer's needs and marketers understand the product's capabilities, magic happens. It's about creating a shared language and a common goal. By breaking down the walls between these two critical teams… You'll create a powerful force that can take your startup to new heights. So, if you want to succeed in the tech world, make sure your engineering and marketing teams are working hand in hand.

TLDR - Launched "Handshake", my career guidance service over TopMate. Book your slot at https://topmate.io/vishy Over the weekend, I kind of decided to eat that proverbial frog. So I have been doing startup advisory for sometime. Have helped multiple early/mid stage founders refine their pitches, improve their product and engineering execution. Have also helped them with hiring for key roles. But somehow, I have always reserved the 1 on 1 mentorship discussions exclusively for folks at my work. I want to open this up for the community now. I will carve out a few hours every weekend to talk to a few of you who meet the criteria mentioned below. So this is for you if - You are working or want to work in a top tier tech role in an IC or managerial or leadership role You are deliberate about your career trajectory You believe in polishing your work and not resume You want to leapfrog the rest by doing the fundamentally right things You want to compound financial wealth and personal equity without jumping jobs You are authentic and not a version of someone else you are trying to be. I have mentored engineers and engineering leaders and helped them reach their potential at both big tech and startup environments. If you think you could do with some help too, feel free to reach out. PS - This will cost you a princely sum of INR 1/-

Venture engineers are about to revolutionize the tech industry. In the coming years, they will surpass product engineers and software engineers in demand. Here’s why agencies that only provide software engineers will be left behind: 1. Holistic Approach Venture engineers don’t just code; they understand the business, the market, and the product. They integrate these insights to build solutions that are not just functional, but also market-ready. 2. Innovation Drivers Venture engineers are trained to think like entrepreneurs. They bring innovative ideas to the table, pushing boundaries and creating unique products that stand out. 3. Versatility Unlike traditional software engineers, venture engineers are versatile. They can pivot between coding, product management, and even marketing, making them invaluable to startups. 4. Future-Proof As technology evolves, the need for multi-skilled professionals will grow. Venture engineers are already ahead of the curve, equipped with the skills to adapt and thrive. The future is clear: agencies must evolve or risk becoming obsolete. - 🔔 Follow me, Danail, for tips on venture building. 🔥 Camplight | Your Digital Venture Builder & get inspired. ❤️ Trust your instincts, and build for impact! #VentureBuilding #VentureStudios #VentureEngineering #SoftwareAgencies #SoftwareDevelopment #ProductDevelopment #ProductEngineering

Key Takeaways from SF Tech Week: What kind of talent founders are looking for?🚀 This is purely based on the observations I had from the 100+ founders I’d interacted with who were in the 0-1 or 1-10 stages of building, 🌱Pre-seed(50% of folks I met): 👉Co-founder Search: Non-technical founders actively looking for technical co-founders to bring their product idea to life. 👉MVP Development: Typically both founders were fully vested in the idea, and the next step was to find product managers and early engineers who could build the first version of the product (hiring needs depend on the complexity of the MVP) 🌴Seed Stage(30%): At this stage, the focus shifts toward hiring “good” engineers and folks with experience in content marketing and outbound sales. 👉Product Enhancement: Seed-funded startups seeking full-stack engineers or specialized talent in AI/ML to enhance their product. Remote roles are increasingly common. 👉Founding GTM Team: Typically hiring 1-2 early sales or marketing hires to land their first set of active customers, often in a specific niche or vertical. 📈Series A(20%): 👉Scaling Tech Teams: Founders are searching for senior engineers with experience in scaling infrastructure and dealing with ‘high user growth’. 👉Sales & Ops Leadership: Startups at this stage are building out leadership in sales and operations to streamline growth and improve efficiency. Are these challenges relatable? I'd love to connect with folks who have played an active role in scaling tech startups in the 0-1 or 1-10 stages. Open to collaborations as I pick up some interesting projects to work on. #SFTechweek #a16z #siliconvalley #aistartup #FutureTech #GenAI
