The HRC's Corporate Equality Index isn't enough. This benchmarking tool has long been used as way for major corporations to "check the boxes" of LGBTQIA+ inclusion. While all of these policies and benefits are important, true inclusion is a feeling. The Corporate Equality Index is sorely missing employee satisfaction data and testimonials about how truly affirming and inclusive these workplaces are. As Pride Month draws to a close, I ask: what about the other 11 months of the year? And indeed, what of the many years to come and the many future generations of #LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities? It should never be about only one month—only one month in which special events are held, and talk of #allyship, #authenticity, #respect, #diversity, and #equity is much more frequent. Because, we know, #disadvantage, #discrimination and #exclusion happen every day. Every month. Recent data from Pride in Diversity's 2024 Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI) Employee Survey found LGBTIQA+ respondents are: • 10.6% less likely to feel they can be themselves at work, • 9.8% less likely to feel they belong, • 9.0% less likely to feel mentally well. The evidence is clear. While the label of 'Pride Month' may not be in place any longer next week, the negative experiences faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and many other disadvantaged and #minoritised groups will still be. So, let's not end our focus and work but continue to speak out, learn, evolve our allyship, and fight for respect and equity. Every. Single. Day.
