During a recent internship hiring experience, I came across a candidate who initially applied for a graphic design internship role but asked if he would get to work with UX/UI team. Also, wanted to learn how the marketing team operates as well. The candidate seemed a little confused in what field he wants to pursue the internship in, but had a spark of trying out different things. This is something that’s normal, and happens with each of us when we’re starting out our career. I took a little time to understand what the candidate was into, and suggested if he proceeded with an internship into x field, as it would align with his college grad internship program. Once he finishes the internship in x field for a few months, he could experiment other field of interest for the next few months. This way, the candidate would have both the work experiences, along with it being mentioned on the resume, and will have a fair understanding of how x and y fields work and where is it that his interest lies. If you’re just starting out, be it that you’re a fresh college grad or no, experimenting with internships in different fields of interest might be the best thing you could possibly do.
