Youth empowerment is a crucial aspect of societal development, as young people represent the future leaders and innovators of tomorrow. In order to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future, it is essential to provide young people with the necessary tools, resources, and opportunities to unleash their full potential. While youth empowerment can be fostered at the local level through policies and programs implemented by governments and community organizations, the outside world also has a role to play in supporting and promoting youth empowerment on a global scale. One of the most effective ways the outside world can contribute to youth empowerment is through financial support. Many young people around the world lack access to basic resources such as education, healthcare, and clean water. By providing financial assistance to organizations and initiatives that aim to improve the lives of young people, the outside world can help ensure that all young people have the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Additionally, financial support can also be used to fund youth entrepreneurship programs, which can help young people develop the skills and knowledge needed.

Building on the success of peer research for young people, Rocket Science has been managing several youth funds for the past six years, seeing great progress in funders shifting power to young people in the design and assessment of youth projects. Go! London, is a £19.5m fund supporting disadvantaged children and young people across London providing sport and physical activities, as well as improving sustainability for groups providing these much-needed services. 🚀 The process was reviewed and finalised with input from several equity groups. 🚀 The application asks how a youth voice is embedded across their organisation and particularly how young people are involved in programme design and organisational decision making. 🚀 Assessments and decision making includes young people, acknowledging their insight and opinions on whether a project will appeal to young people. There are many great examples of funders doing similar things; Camden Giving and their Youth Futures Fund, and Vested from Shift Design. It would be great to see more of this power shift and move towards youth-led grant management as the sector transitions from youth voice to youth power.

The team at Youth Empowerment resonates deeply with the words of Malcolm X: "A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything." This quote encapsulates their core belief in the importance of standing firm in their values and principles, especially when faced with adversity and challenges. At Youth Empowerment, the team is committed to empowering young people to find their voices, stand up for what they believe in, and advocate for positive change in their communities. They understand that in today's world, where young people are bombarded with various influences and pressures, it's essential to instill a sense of purpose and conviction. Just as Malcolm X emphasized the necessity of having a strong foundation of beliefs, the team at Youth Empowerment believes in equipping young people with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions and take meaningful action. They strive to create a supportive environment where youth can explore their values, develop critical thinking skills, and become advocates for themselves and others. Moreover, the team recognizes that standing for nothing leaves individuals vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation. Therefore, they are dedicated to fostering a sense of agency and empowerment among young people, encouraging them to be active participants in shaping their futures. Through mentorship, education, and community engagement initiatives, the team at Youth Empowerment empowers young people to identify their passions, voice their opinions, and effect positive change in their lives and communities. They firmly believe that by standing firm in their values and convictions, young people can overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential, just as Malcolm X envisioned.

Social planning meets Synthetic Populations! RWI Synthetics’ platform application for Youth Sense of Belonging in the Waterloo Region (Ontario, Canada) was selected as a poster presentation showcase at the Othering and Belonging Conference at the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley in Oakland, CA, April 25th to 27th, 2024! Sense of Belonging is now recognized as an invaluable measure of youth sentiment, a critical insight for policymakers and other decisions in infrastructure, programming, and transportation in the future of their regions. The conference brought together reps worldwide who are invested in understanding and growing belonging in their communities. We were pleased and excited to represent the belonging work happening in the Waterloo region via the Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region. It was great to have Alison Pearson, a champion in Youth Belonging, Jim Moss and Serena McDiarmid of the Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region, and Debbie Engel at the poster session. RWI Synthetics generated the region and ran scenarios, including the impact of accessible programming and subsidized transit on Youth Sense of Belonging to connect investments to individual and community health, economics, and retention outcomes. A huge shout out to the Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region and the Grand River Transit team for championing the work on Youth Belonging in the Waterloo Region. This work led to intriguing insights from de-siloing decisions across multiple fields that converge to affect today’s youth and their ability to succeed and give back to the community! #Belonging #PosterSession #YouthBelonging #SyntheticPopulations #SenseOfBelonging
