I was watching a video interview of Krish Shankar on Prashant Srivastava's YouTube channel. Krish mentioned something that struck me hard! He said, he worked in all areas of HR, except C&B! C&B (aka Total Rewards, as Aon named it) is a rocket science within HR, as many believe. I can understand the complications, due to taxes and compliances and then executive compensation has further complications due to RSUs, ESOPs and SARs, Bonuses, severance pays, etc..for different countries that company runs it's offices in. However, every country has it's specialist C&B folks, who are regionally or globally guided by C&B consultants from Aon, Mercer, WTW, Vencon, etc.. In honest terms, if there is any Rocket Science in C&B, leave it to experts like Aon and your CFO! HR folks in C&B roles get a clear structure and guidelines, which are easy to follow, without getting pizzled by any complications as mentioned above! Many years back, I was listening to Mr. Mahalingam , then Global VP HR for Symphony Services at an HR conference in Bangalore. He joked, "today, people in HR, who know MS Excel well, can do V and H look up, a bit of Macros are the C&B guys!" His another joke from the same lecture was on L&D folks; he said, "today, L&D folks need their learning programs more than anyone else in the company!" L&D ops has become a life-boat for L&D folks to cling on to!"
