My conversation with "Bubba" was impromptu! I was exploring Clarksdale on foot and stopped by the tourism office, where he works. We chatted right up until I needed to head to Cleveland, Mississippi for interviews with Dr. Rolanda Herts and Dr. Pam Chatman. Bubba's love and commitment to Clarksdale was palpable. I loved how he made no attempts to gloss over the economic challenges of the region and works to identify the what's unique and sacred about the Delta in order to translate that into economic activity. On the other hand, when he talked about people, he chose to focus on love and didn't want to rehearse the injuries of the past. Interestingly, many people of color view being solely future-focused is an attempt to dodge the difficult topic of race in America. Just before connecting with Bubba and ironically, I'd just had a conversation with Rebekah and Ben of the Griot Arts program (about a 5 minute walk away) where they talked about how important it is to deal with race and the transgressions of the past. In particular, they talked a visioning exercise they did with the community to generate ideas about how to best utilize an older the theater that had been donated to their organization. They shared that a white gentleman participated in that exercise and suggested that they focus on love and moving forward. As I spoke with Bubba, I wondered if he was that guy. I point out this "antagonism" because it is the crux of conflict. When I work as a mediator and when I facilitate conflict resolution processes with teams, one of the most important parts of each process is giving the parties an opportunity to be heard. Sometimes, even when the parties feel as if the other side understands them, they find it hard to work together. By the same token, in those instances, where one or both of the parties don't feel heard or respected, those cases RARELY end with a sustainable solution (sustainable means that neither party will ask that the issue be reopened later). We all learn for others: If you get mentioned, please respond with someone who has inspired or helped you improve. Week 6: Peter Lafontaine Laffontaine Peter was one of the first people I met at Rainforest. Right away, I knew that I was going to like him. He has a perfect mix of blue-collar roughness, which I suspect he picked up while fur trading for the Houston Bay Company, and sophistication, which he probably got working with both Steves at Apple. Or maybe it was the other way around. Who can tell? Pete is a big thinker. He is talented at bringing ideas and people together. But I have also noticed that Pete is unafraid to roll up his sleeves and muck in. Whether organizing a charity ride or building his venture, Rainforest Energy, he puts his heart into the work. I have also felt the care he provides to people trying to make a difference. When I was down, Pete was ready to encourage me, share some of his sage wisdom, or cheer me up with a story of his colorful past. If you have not met Pete, you should have. He is the old guy who is solid as a rock because he rides his bike all year round. I have never seen him drive, but he always rides his bike. He has helped me remove my excuses of getting out and exercising because of bad weather. I often feel inspired by Pete. I feel like I can accomplish the things I have set my mind to by being consistent. I also know that if I need help or insight, he is there to help. And if I need to laugh, Pete grabbing a beer with Pete is a good option. I mentioned that Pete thinks big, but what is most impressive is how big his heart is. Peter Lafontaine, you make Alberta a better place to live. Thanks for everything you do.

Strengthening #family bonds through shared activities and celebrations My partner Benety Gunn and I started our entrepreneurial journey with the objective of giving a better lifestyle to our family and later on, we added that we wanted to create an option for our children in the future, to take over our businesses. It is the ‘family’ that gives strength and support to us to continue thriving in this entrepreneurial journey. So, while we were striving, we kept reminding one another to not neglect to spend time with our children, if all these endeavors are done with them in mind. With that being said, we incorporate ways we run our boutique agency into our household 😄 same system, just a different platform. In some of our activities, we bring them along, so that they know our business at a younger age. Celebrating small achievements and enjoying movie nights together are just some of the ways we ‘copycat’ and apply to our family to build a strong bond. We create opportunities for quality time and connection with loved ones. From cooking challenges to DIY projects, there are endless possibilities to strengthen family ties and create lasting memories. Many laughter too.
