Google takes a heavy commissions on in-app purchases for the apps listed on playstore. This extra charge often results in mark up price which then had to be paid by consumers. Recently, Google removed ten apps by indian developers from Play Store after they filed lawsuits against the tech giant. Google's Playstore revenue in 2022 was USD 42 Billion and Apple's estimated earning from its AppStore was USD 10 Billion in 2020. Obviously these are milch cows. They pocket a cool 30% cut of all revenues that an application's developer makes. What for? For creating a market place which in-turn creates demand. 30% is a huge number. Remember this is 30% of all spending. Not profits. (Those of you who are comparing this to the amounts source countries get to #tax for creating #markets and #demand, I feel for you). And as is the nature of markets, In December, in a jury trial took place between Epic Games (the maker of the incredibly popular video game Fortnite) and Google. Jurors upheld Epic's accusation of Google trying to monopolize app-stores and charge unduly high fees from developers of apps. In this stunning turn of events, Google has agreed to amend its Google Play policies aimed at reducing barriers to competition in the app-store market. Apple is facing similar lawsuits too. What is surprising is an e-mail I received today morning from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), informing about the mSeva AppStore. It is India’s first indigenously developed AppStore that is available for hosting mobile apps. It has been developed under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission by National Informatics Centre, MeitY. All Indian developers can upload their apps for free to the mSeva AppStore. It is entirely free-of-cost on a trusted and secure government platform. Isn't this amazing? India's Digital Public Infrastructure started with #aadhaar, moved on to #upi, then to #digilocker and now is going strong with the Open Network for Digital Commerce(#ondc). These frameworks did not just eliminate inefficiences, they also significantly cut down user-charges, commissions and fees. The mSeva AppStore is aimed to do exactly the same for mobile applications. In September 2022, Google introduced the pilot programme for the real-money game (RMG) developers to launch Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) and Rummy gaming titles with restrictions on its Play Store in India, Brazil and Mexico. The search giant said that the program with extended support for real-#money gaming will start in India, Brazil and Mexico in June, with rollout in more countries planned in the #future. Google is also considering a new service fee model for subscriptions and in-app purchases. However, the #company didn’t disclose many details about the cut it will take from developers. “With this policy update, we will also be evolving our #service fee model for RMG to reflect the value Google Play provides and to help sustain the #Android and Play ecosystems. We are working closely with developers to ensure our new approach reflects the unique #economics and various developer earning models of this #industry,” Karan Gambhir, director, Global Trust & Safety Partnerships at Google, said in a blog post. Typically, #Google has allowed real-money gaming apps that are governed by local regulatory frameworks for a particular type. With the change in policy, the company will allow more types of real-money gaming apps, which are legal but not regulated. Google started working on including real-money gaming apps on the Play Store in 2021. In 2022, it started a pilot in India to allow fantasy sports and Rummy apps on the local Play Store. Last year, Google provided an extension to already approved apps until January 15. And with the latest announcement, the pilot apps will have a grace period until June 30. . . . . . . . . . Uber, Snapchat, and Walmart conducted experiments comparing annual vs. yearly plans. Interestingly, regardless of which one served as the control or variant, the annual plan set as default won in every experiment. While testing is always encouraged for every app out there, it appears that defaulting to the annual plan could be a strong conversion strategy. Our Costliest Mistake Yet 🤯 Here's how we lost over €1,300 in revenue in one week: 🚫 Google Play Store Issues 🚫 Last Monday, conversions from "Trial-To-Paid" and "Trial-started" suddenly stopped on Android. Initially, we thought it was a statistical anomaly, but by Tuesday, we realized something was wrong. Identifying the cause: We switched from "Individual" to "Company" on Play Store 🤯 Our old payment profile was rejected due to missing documents. So without prior notice, Google just stopped allowing our users to pay (including conversions from trials). We sent the required documents immediately but needed to move to a new Play Store Account. The app transfer to the new account took 4 days. We saw all declined payments & trial starts in the Google Play console: We lost 9 customers worth €800 and 24 trials worth approx. €500. This makes a total loss of over €1,300 💸 Another day in startup life 🤷♂
