One of the sage pieces of advice I received as a first time manager many years ago was from Dave Martin (I bet he doesn't remember). I was trying to get my head around the leadership / people element of the role in practice. In one of our many conversations, he told me (I am paraphrasing) that if I could learn to consistently show up for my people in ways they needed me to (and within reason), they most likely would consistently show up for me as a leader in ways I needed them to.
