I'm excited to see our fellows Burn Manufacturing reach this incredible milestone of 5 million cooking appliances produced! Clean cooking is essential for the health and well-being of millions of people around the world, especially in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, indoor air pollution from cooking with solid fuels is a major health risk, particularly for women and children. It's estimated that it causes 3.8 million deaths each year ([https://lnkd.in/dYpnhx5h)). I can personally relate to the challenges of traditional cooking methods. Growing up in a village, we would cook using firewood. This not only contributed to deforestation but also filled our home with harmful smoke. Burn Manufacturing's clean cooking appliances are making a real difference. Their 5 million appliances have benefitted an estimated 24.1 million people and prevented 21.7 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Our Story In 1990, Peter Scott was traveling through Zaire (present day DRC) when he witnessed the deforestation caused by the production of charcoal for household cooking. At that time, he dedicated his life to saving the forests of sub-Saharan Africa by designing and building fuel-efficient stoves. In 2010, after spending 13 years as a cookstove consultant in Central America and Sub-Saharan Africa, Peter started Burn Design Lab and BURN Manufacturing Co. on Vashon Island, Washington. On a shoestring budget, BURN has assembled a team of world-class designers and engineers who are equally committed to designing the most fuel-efficient cookers in the world. In 2014, BURN launched its first full manufacturing facility in Kenya - the first and only of its kind. BURN is now the only vertically integrated modern cookstove company in sub-Saharan Africa. The solar-powered facility currently has a capacity of 400,000 stoves per month and employs over 2,500 people, half of whom are women. When BURN first started, there was little confidence in the cookstove industry to deliver tangible results. Over the past 10 years, BURN has built a successful business while proving that cookstoves can have transformative social, financial and environmental impacts. A recent study by UC Berkeley shows that a domestic investment of $40 to buy a Jikokoa generates a staggering return of $1,000 for the society. Here's a brief overview of toilets in other countries compared to those in Uganda: Other countries: *In many developed countries like the UK, US, and Canada, modern flush toilets with sewage systems are the norm. *In some European countries like Sweden and Germany, eco-friendly toilets that use minimal water or recycle waste are becoming popular. *In Japan, high-tech toilets with advanced features like heated seats, bidets, and advanced flushing systems are common. Uganda: *In Uganda, access to improved sanitation facilities is limited, especially in rural areas. *Many households use pit latrines, simple latrines, or shared facilities. *Flush toilets are less common, especially in rural areas, due to limited access to sewage systems and water supply. At Cicada, everything we do is built on a foundation of honesty, transparency, and evidence!  We are aware that concerns have been raised around the adoption rates and the suitability of the cookstove devices in a rural Zimbabwean setting, and we have been doing actual studies to find out more about stove use habits and preferences. So far, we have conducted habit surveys of 14,218 households and found that an impressive 91.3% of households use their stove at least once a day, with only 0.6% not using them at all. The M&E habit survey results also showed that:  ✨ 72% of families use their cookstoves twice a day or more ✨ 54% also use the stoves to heat their bath water ✨ The cookstove is also used for other daily household activities Most households found that cookstoves outperform open fires across various aspects such as durability, temperature control, fire stability, amount of smoke produced, and ease of use in general. This widespread adoption is a testament to how these stoves are truly transforming lives. This is really important data. There is a lot of commentary on clean cooking based on inappropriate or irrelevant comparables. This is a summary of real data from over 14,000 stove recipients in our project clearly indicating that adoption rates are very high (over 90% using the stove daily) and that satisfaction with the stove is equally high. We know there is much more to do to get universal access to clean modern cooking for rural households in Zimbabwe, but this is a powerful demonstration that these stoves work and are hugely popular.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, about 990 million people lack access to clean cooking fuels and technologies. Households without clean cooking solutions spend an average of five hours daily on fuel collection and cooking, which severely restricts women and girls from pursuing education or earning an income. The economic constraints and remote locations of these households preclude access to other improved cookstoves available in the market, which are often imported and sold in urban settings at prices equating to at least 20% of these families’ monthly incomes. Mukuru Clean Stoves stands out as one of the few cookstove companies that have successfully reached the most impoverished and remote communities in Western Kenya, guaranteeing affordablity and accessibility to the communities most vulnerable to household air pollution, energy poverty and the adverse effects of high carbon emissions.
