Events of the last three months or so will shape the way large cohorts of the Australian population assess the character, integrity and fitness for office of federal politicians and parties on issues of fundamental importance to them, much as happened during the years of the Vietnam War in the 1960s. But whereas the Vietnam War convinced a cohort to vote Labor for a generation, the current combination of events is likely to convince some cohorts that neither major party is worthy of trust or respect to govern. Recent immigration trends have added millions to the US labor force and satiated the demand from employers by filling low wage job openings, restoring the overall job market closer to an equilibrium state that existed prior to the pandemic. What will be the impact if many of those workers get deported? What are the longer term implications of encouraging a European arms buildup when the US backs away from military support? These are some of the issues mentioned in the below post of a New York Times article that just dropped. I’ve never seen a Presidential election more influential than this one in determining future social, economic and political outcomes.

As the UK gears up for the next election, striking parallels are emerging between the challenges faced by Margaret Thatcher in 1979 and those looming on the horizon for the next administration. From soaring inflation to resurfacing strikes, the landscape bears undeniable resemblances to the tumultuous era that Thatcher inherited. Civil servants in Whitehall are already preparing briefings for incoming ministers, reminiscent of the preparations made four decades ago. These uncanny similarities raise questions about whether Britain is on the brink of revisiting the upheavals of the past and signal the daunting tasks awaiting the winner of the upcoming election. As the nation stands at this critical juncture, the echoes of history serve as a sobering reminder of the need for decisive leadership and innovative solutions to navigate the challenges ahead.

A reflection on the political science equivalent of Dornbusch’s Law – the theorem coined in the 1990s that financial crises take much longer to come than you might imagine and then accelerate much faster than you might anticipate. Something similar applied to the ALP. The under-currents might seem tame on the surface, but when a dramatic change materialises, the turbulence becomes more tumultuous than expected. Observers therefore get a chance to be wrong twice in anticipation of the severity of the problem, and then about how all-encompassing and rapid might be the consequences. On Friday, March 22, Vice President Harris traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico to uplift the Biden-Harris Administration’s ongoing commitment to supporting the island’s recovery and renewal, particularly energy resilience. Vice President Harris highlighted Puerto Rico’s economic turnaround thanks to more than$140 billion in Federal obligations for the island supported by unprecedented whole-of-government partnerships through the Puerto Rico Economic Dialogue. Since President Biden and Vice President Harris took office, Puerto Rico has added more than 100,000 new jobs. Unemployment on the island is now at a historic low of under six percent, and labor force participation is growing to the highest level in more than a decade.

Tonight's presidential debate will be a clash between good and evil, just not in the way you expect. Let us explain: As Ben Dockery said in his recent article, "When politics is the reason humans avoid interaction, we [the demons] are winning." I’m looking forward to participating in the World Academy of Art and Science General Assembly today. We’ll be discussing ‘Human Security’ for policymakers, with my colleagues from the Inter-Parliamentary Union So, what’s ‘Human Security’? Well, it’s all about putting people first. Members of Parliament (MPs) need to respond in a way that considers everyone’s well-being. It’s like looking at a puzzle with lots of pieces – MPs have to figure out how to solve it by considering different angles. This approach helps MPs better understand and tackle the complex challenges that affect people’s lives, like safety, jobs, and dignity. By using this approach, MPs can come up with better solutions that cover different areas and are based on real-life situations. Ultimately, this helps us engage with the public more effectively and build a stronger, trustworthy democracy.
