Despite its tiny size, the Maldives is an important player in regional affairs because of its vital maritime routes in the Indian Ocean. In 1988, more than thirty years ago, India was instrumental in saving the Maldives from a coup attempt. The choices made by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the time established the basis for strong relations between the two nations. Tamil mercenaries from the People's Liberation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), headed by Uma Maheswaran and financed by an irate Abdullah Luthufi, a businessman from the Maldives, attacked the country on November 3, 1988. By organizing a coup, the mercenaries sought to topple Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's administration and provide a haven for PLOTE. The armed mercenaries were wreaking havoc in Male, the capital, even though President Gayoom was able to shelter in a safe house. A key player in the operation, General Vice President Malik, called it "a race against time." When the IL-76 plane touched down at Hulhule, Indian forces took control of the airfield. By one morning the following day, troops had arrived in Male, rounded up mercenaries, and found and secured President Gayoom. To protect the hostages, the Indian Navy's INS Godavari and INS Betwa pursued and sunk a cargo ship that Abdullah Luthufi had taken over. When the Maldives encountered another crisis in 2018, opposition leaders in Delhi requested immediate military action. India's dedication to regional stability and the significance of prompt and decisive action were demonstrated by the events 1988. The episode serves as a historical record of India's involvement in preserving the stability of its surrounding countries in the Indian Ocean region, even while the Maldives vacillates between affiliations. Happy to share my latest article for Geopoliticalmonitor Intelligence Corp., co-authored with Dr. Rahul Lad and Dr. Ravindra Jaybhaye, about the Maldives' increasingly hostile stance towards India. We write that President Mohamed Muizzu's sharp turn away from India and towards China is unlikely to yield favourable results for the Maldives because China grapples with the tyranny of distance and India enjoys a natural advantage in this area. #india #maldives #china #indianocean

Dear All, The International Court of Justice (ICJ) hearings regarding the genocide case against Israel will start on Thursday Jan. 11. It will be broadcast live on https://webtv.un.org/en. - The first hearing will focus on the request for provisional measures to stop the hostilities while the court is deliberating. Measures might include an order for a cease-fire and an embargo on arms sales. Such measures might save the lives of many civilians including innocent children. - There is an effort to crowd-source, evidence for genocidal intent and acts and share it with the panel of judges and their teams (15 + 1 to be nominated by Israel +1 to be nominated by South Africa). - We have seen a lot of horrific videos and images over the last few months. We have heard a lot of chilling stories from loved ones or acquaintances. It's the moment to share all of that with the judges and their team and try to contribute to a favorable decision. - A simple email from each of us supporting the proceedings submitted by South Africa and including links documenting genocidal acts and intent can be very helpful. - Below the email of the 15 main judges and their teams: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]. - Feel free to circulate this message to your family, friends and network. Thank you all.

My piece defining my thoughts on the issue of persistent turmoil in the Middle East on the platform Global Strategic & Defence News under the guidance of Lt Col JS Sodhi (Retd). The façade of resistance to reform is itself using the ascendence of political Islam as a convenient scare tactic, with a General saying in the halls of the elites, “You open up the system, and the Islamists come in.” My opinion piece revolves around this to understand the artificially engineered geopolitical quagmire of turmoil in the Middle East. Always open for further discussion.
