My dad was deeply involved in corporate life, often bringing home various company merchandise, including these Crescendo magazines. These were company publications by Lafarge (now Holcim Group) that he would bring home whenever a new issue was released. While these issues might not have been the pinnacle of design, I found them captivating. Simple, minimal, and important, they effectively conveyed who Lafarge was. What fascinated me most was their thoroughness in process. Seamless. Consistent. On-point. From design to distribution, the issues were delivered punctually and at regular intervals. At the time, I didn't realize that this punctuality and precision were integral to branding. This was all part of a comprehensive branding experience that both internal employees and customers engaged with. They were immersed in Lafarge’s complete brand experience. Cool, I thought back then. The consistency of it all profoundly influenced my fascination with branding’s core purpose: reinforcing a business’s identity. Consistency in branding not only aids in brand recognition but also builds trust and loyalty, conveys professionalism and credibility, and helps differentiate a brand in a crowded marketplace. This realization underscored the importance of maintaining consistency to establish a strong, reliable, and memorable brand identity. It was this exposure that kindled my interest in studying design, branding, and marketing to understand how these elements can shape a company’s identity and influence its audience. Lafarge has since shut down in 2021 due to its involvement in financing terrorist organizations and complicity in crimes against humanity, as confirmed by the French Supreme Court (Wikipedia). However, as someone who witnessed its presence in the early 2010s, its authority as a brand remains in my mind. This proves that consistency in branding creates wonders and outlives the business beyond its function. And that’s what consistency got me—a career from childhood wonder. Crazy. Encouraging eco-friendly practices ✨ Lucent’s own James Morris-Jones interviewed Nicolas Martin of LVMH on the best sustainable lighting solutions for retail spaces. Beneath the shiny veneer and trendy styles, fast fashion is an environmental nightmare. According to Maxine Bédat, director of the New Standard Institute, the largely unregulated fast fashion industry has more emissions than the entire aviation industry and is on a path to producing one-fourth of the world’s greenhouse gases. A new bill could help regulate large fashion companies that make more than $100 million globally and operate in Washington, requiring them to report their environmental due diligence policies and environmental impacts. By Jan. 1, 2027 the companies would have to establish and track performance targets. If those targets aren’t met, the state Department of Ecology could issue penalties, which would be added to a Community Benefit Account for overburdened and at-risk communities. Recently, our CEO, Simon Dorries, had the pleasure of joining the forum held by the Australian Furniture Association -AFA on the future of the Australian furniture industry and the importance of sustainable sourcing. The forum, “Grow. Promote. Protect.” brought together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the industry's strategic priorities for the future. Among the key topics explored was the importance of sustainable sourcing, particularly forest products certified by Responsible Wood and PEFC. The forum underscored the Australian furniture industry's increasingly global outlook, with a strong focus on supply chain integrity, environmental responsibility, and market competitiveness. As demand for ethically sourced products continues to grow, the role of sustainable forest management and certification in ensuring that these products meet stringent environmental and social standards has never been more critical.

In recent years, more people and societies worldwide are placing a high value and much more importance on Sustainability. This sustainability can range from the environmental friendliness of a business’s products and services, to the general well-being and opportunities for employees.
