If you missed the recent InterFace Conference Group Seattle Multifamily conference, here were some key takeaways from AXIS/GFA Principal Radim Blazej: - 4 different panels addressed the current challenges and opportunities in the PNW, covering financing, design, investment, and sales. - While many opinions confirmed that the market remains challenging from financing and construction costs, and only slowly improving from a weak 2023, we are seeing a new interest in moving new projects forward with new equity versus preserving the existing assets. - Discussion on design stressed the importance of flexibility of use for common spaces and amenities to allow the building to reprogram them with new uses. - Interestingly, most panelists opined that adaptive reuse is very difficult to make work, given the intensity of the multifamily programming. This was interesting as at the same time we've noticed cities pushing for new legislation to convert offices into housing. It was great to catch up with a lot of people in the industry. Great afternoon and thanks to Interface for the excellent programming! #MultiFamilyHousing #MultiFamilyArchitecture #ApartmentArchitecture #SeattleHousing #PNWHousing #MultiFamilyDevelopment #WorkforceHousing

People are always curious about what goes into major real estate developments. Although this is old, it’s still a great resource/reference point. There’s a lot to be absorbed from this deck in terms of high level considerations, especially the appendix. Its often seldom to have an opportunity to openly discuss the details of any transaction, much less share the actual materials used, so any student interested in real estate should scour this deck.

Associate Professor @ Universiti Putra Malaysia | PhD in Housing & Management in the Built Environment
I'm deeply engrossed in my thesis work on FlexZHouse, and I find immense inspiration in John Habraken’s architectural philosophy, particularly his seminal work, "Supports: An Alternative to Mass Housing." Habraken’s innovative separation of 'support' (the long-lasting framework) and 'infill' (the customizable spaces) aligns perfectly with the FlexZHouse principle of adaptable, user-centric living environments. Like Habraken, FlexZHouse champions modular units that can be reconfigured, expanded, or modified according to the residents' needs, emphasizing sustainability and community involvement. This approach not only facilitates a dynamic interaction between the structure and its inhabitants but also integrates modern technology to enhance functionality and adaptability. Habraken's vision encourages us to rethink how buildings can serve as durable 'supports', while also adapting to technological advancements and evolving lifestyle demands. By applying these ideas, FlexZHouse is set to transform the concept of living spaces, making them more flexible, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of their communities. Let’s explore how these transformative concepts can be further applied in our projects and collaborations to redefine residential spaces for modern living. #Architecture #HousingInnovation #SustainableDesign #CommunityBuilding #FlexZHouse #JohnHabraken #openbuilding
